UCF Claims Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship at Keith Hills No. 2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The University of Central Florida won its first Atlantic Sun Conference men's golf championship in eight years on Wednesday, and did so in record-breaking form.

The Golden Knights, who led after each of the three rounds at Keith Hills No. 2, broke the A-Sun 54-hole record with a three-day total of 845 strokes, 19-under-par.

UCF senior Barry Roof, a native of Conway, S.C., won individual honors, shooting 11-under-par for the event on the par-72, 6836-yard layout. Roof carded back-to-back 68s in the first two rounds, then posted a 69 on Wednesday to give UCF is second-straight individual A-Sun medalist.

Campbell senior Braxton Wynns, a Buies Creek resident, finished second on his home course, two strokes behind.

The Golden Knights shot 281-276-288 to break the old A-Sun 54-hole record of 849 strokes set in 1986 by Houston Baptist and equaled by Jacksonville State last year at Indigo Lakes in Daytona Beach.

Georgia State finished second at 13-under (851), bolstered by a second-round 275. Campbell, despite firing Wednesday's low round of five-under (283), placed third in the 11-school field at 11-under-par (853).

Ty Harris of Georgia State was third individually at seven-under, followed by Troy State's Brent Dorner (minus-six) and Campbell senior Ulf Hedlund (five-under). The top five individuals were named to the all-tournament team.

Three other UCF players finished among the top 16 individuals – sixth-place Sonny Nimkhum, Andreas Hoegberg, who tied for eighth, and Steve Bain, who tied for 13th. Stefan Wistorf, who won the 2003 A-Sun individual title as a freshman, finished in a tie for 35th at nine-over 225.

UCF earned the A-Sun automatic berth in next month's NCAA Regionals, which will be held in New Haven, Conn., West Lafayette, Ind., and Sun River, Ore.
