Madison Downs Campbell 39-8 in Wrestling
HARRISONBURG, Va.
(2/5/05) James Madison won six of eight contested bouts and
soundly defeated Campbell, 39-8, in Colonial Athletic Association
wrestling Saturday afternoon at Godwin Hall. The Dukes improved to
3-13 overall and to 2-5 in the CAA. The Camels slipped to 2-12 and
1-6.
The Dukes took charge
early with sophomore Jeff Jacobs opening the match with a 4-0
decision against Billy Sheridan at 149 pounds. A pin by senior 157
Derick Schoenly at the 4:07 mark against freshman Broc Dickerson
gave the Dukes a 9-0 margin that quickly became 15-0 after a
forfeit at 165 pounds. For Schoenly, the win was his fourth in a
row, giving him a 6-5 dual record and a 7-7 overall
ledger.
JMU senior Brian
Lambert registered his team-best fourth fall of the season,
sticking senior Brian Hocum 1:51 into the bout. Lambert upped his
overall record to 16-6 and improved his CAA mark to 5-1. Lambert's
fall made it 21-0 in favor of the home team. Hocum slipped to
10-11.
Redshirt junior
heavyweight Chris Cvitan scored more bonus points for JMU, getting
a second-period fall that boosted his record to 6-5 in duals and
8-8 overall. Cvitan had one other fall this season prior to the
match.
The Dukes other wins
were turned in on decisions by junior Brian Kibler and sophomore
Zach Winfrey, respectively at 141 and 197 pounds.
Campbell scored a pair
of major decisions, the first by 184-pound redshirt senior Lantz
Nixon and the second by 133-pound sophomore Caleb Lesnoff. Nixon
raised his team-best record to 11-2 while claiming his fifth major
of the season. Lesnoff pushed his CAA record to 3-2 and improved
overall to 3-5.
The Camels will
host George Mason Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in their next outing. The
Dukes, who avenged a 27-20 loss to the Camels last spring and
picked up their 10th win in the 12-match series history, travel
