Jiri
Beranek Named Atlantic Sun Conference Men's
Tennis Player of the Week
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell senior Jiri Beranek has been named Atlantic
Sun Conference men's tennis player of the week.
The
native of Provodin, Czech Republic, improved his singles record to
10-2 on the year, 4-0 in dual matches with victories over
Gardner-Webb and Georgia State last weekend in CU's first two A-Sun
matches.
He
is the lone unbeaten singles player in dual matches for the Camels,
facing a schedule that included three nationally-ranked schools
among the first four matches played.
Beranek
missed both the Winthrop and Virginia Commonwealth matches due to
illness, but has lost only one doubles match (against the
ninth-ranked tandem in the country).
He
bounced back to defeat the top players from nationally-ranked
opponents East Tennessee State (Fernando Fiuri) and North Carolina
(Raian Luchici). Luchici was ranked number-66 nationally on Feb. 5
when Beranek scored a 4-6, 7-5, (14-12) super tiebreak victory
indoors at Chapel Hill.
Beranek's
6-1, 6-3 win over Gardner-Webb's Roberto Vasques last Friday marked
the 50th of his singles career. A two-time A-Sun All-Conference
performer, Beranek's career singles record stands at 51-35, and he
has led the Camels to 3-straight winning seasons.
Campbell (2-5, 1-1) plays East Carolina Tuesday at the Cary
Tennis Center.
