Dickson's 22-Foot Triple with 1.7 Seconds Remaining Lifts Campbell over
Gardner-Webb
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Letitia Dickson hit a
3-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining to give Campbell a 57-54 victory over
Gardner-Webb in women's basketball action Monday evening at Carter
Gymnasium.
Dickson, a freshman from nearby Smithfield, N.C., used a Lady
Camel screen at the top of the key to knock down her second
game-winner of the season. The Smithfield-Selma product converted
three free throws with .3 ticks remaining to give Campbell a 64-63
victory over Jacksonville earlier this season. Dickson finished
the contest with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor
including two from long range.
With 2:04 to go, Campbell's Jennifer Lodge connected on just
her second 3-pointer of the season to give the Lady Camels their
largest lead of the night 54-48. Gardner-Webb capitalized on a
couple CU miscues and quickly responded with a 6-0 run of its own
to tie the game 54-54 forcing Campbell to call timeout with just 20
seconds remaining.
Gardner-Webb (4-5, 2-1) never trailed in the opening half and
led by as many as nine on two different occasions. The Bulldogs
Katie Gravel hit a running lay-up with seven seconds to go in the
first half to send GWU into the break up 31-24.
Campbell (4-5, 3-0) raced out of the
gates in the second half on a 10-2 run grabbing its first lead of
the game 34-33 on a Kristin Vuckovich bucket from downtown with
15:16 left. The two teams then traded buckets over the next 9
minutes and 29 seconds to find themselves deadlocked at 44-44 with
5:45 remaining.
Tomika Tomlinson and Jennifer Lodge also scored in
double-figures for the Campbell with 10 points each, while Jennifer
Martin added eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady
Camels.
Gardner-Webb's Candyce Kelly and Sequenta Blackman each scored
13 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Shameka Smith improved on her
rebounding average pulling down a game-high 11 boards.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs controlled the glass
out-rebounding Campbell 40-36, but shot just 56 percent (15-27)
from the charity stripe, while the Lady Camels connected on 64
percent (7-11) of their attempts.
Both Campbell and Gardner-Webb finished the evening shooting
just shy of 37 percent from the floor. The Lady Camels shot 36
percent (8-22) from beyond the 3-point stripe, while the Bulldogs
hit just 23 percent (3-13) of their attempts.
Campbell returns to action Thursday,
Jan. 6 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Atlantic Sun foe
Belmont at 6:00 p.m. ct. [Box Score]
