Fredric
Sundberg Named A-Sun Freshman Golfer of the
Year
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Fredric Sundberg of Campbell University has been
named the Atlantic Sun Conference men's golf Freshman of the Year
in voting by league head coaches.
A
native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Sundberg was also recognized on the
Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team after leading A-Sun frosh in scoring
average (73.3) during the season.
"To
have six underclassmen win honors from our conference, I think,
says a lot about the state of our men's and women's golf program,"
said John Crooks, who is in his 15th year as head men's coach and
14th in charge of the women's squad at Campbell. "These individuals
have all had a very good year, and most will receive academic
honors as well."
Sundberg
had seven top-20 performances during his first collegiate season,
including a pair of top-10s. He won the Charleston Southern Spring
Kick-Off Classic and finished fourth at the Golf Daytona Beach
Classic. He was named A-Sun Golfer of the Month for February.
Jacksonville
University's Duncan Stewart, medalist at last month's Atlantic Sun
Championship, was named Atlantic Sun Men's Golfer of the Year. Matt
Clark of Georgia State was named A-Sun Men's Golf Coach of the Year
after guiding the Panthers to their first A-Sun team crown since
2001.
Stewart
was joined on the Atlantic Sun Men's All-Conference first team by
Cody Hale of Lipscomb, Andreas Hoegberg of UCF, Belmont's Jeff
Lanier and Steve Tiley of Georgia State. Second-team all-conference
honors went to Ty Harris (Georgia State), Russell Knox
(Jacksonville), Rory McCaughna (Gardner-Webb), Brandon Price
(Mercer) and Adam Wynia (Belmont).
In
addition to Sundberg, Ben Leong (UCF), Justin Perry (Lipscomb),
Joel Sjoholm (Georgia State) and Giwon Suh (UCF) also earned
All-Freshman team recognition.
The
2005 A-Sun Golfer, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards are
determined in voting by the league's head coaches. The first,
second and all-freshman team honors are based on the Golfstat
rankings compiled at the conclusion of the A-Sun Championship.
