Snaps Campbell's Women's Soccer
A-Sun Winning Streak
BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Campbell's Atlantic Sun Conference unbeaten streak was ended at 17
matches Thursday night, after a 2-0 loss to Florida Atlantic. With
the loss the Camels fall to 6-5-0 (4-1-0 A-Sun), while the Owls
remain unbeaten in conference play at 8-3-1 (4-0-1 A-Sun).
There were 707 days between the Oct. 29, 2003 loss to
Gardner-Webb and the Camel's loss tonight. The streak ends five
matches shy of tying for 14th best in NCAA history.
Florida Atlantic took the lead just 30 seconds, in when Denise
Brolly converted from the penalty spot, after Campbell's Ashley
McMenamy brought down Alicia Tirelli inside the Camels' penalty
area.
In the second half FAU scored again, when Monique Cabrera's
shot struck the crossbar and went into the goal, to give FAU a 2-0
advantage at the 77:11 mark.
The Camels were unable to muster much offense and finished the
game being out shot 22-1.
Campbell goalkeeper Samar Azem finished the match with eight
saves bringing her total to 55 for the season.
The shutout loss also brings a close to defender Mary Nitz's
five game point streak. Beginning with her two goal performance
against Western Carolina, Nitz had tallied a point in each of the
last five matches from her right back position. Nitz is the current
A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week.
The Camels are off this weekend, as they prepare to travel to
East Tennessee State on Thursday before returning home to host
Kennesaw State on Oct. 15.
