Campbell Wrestling Finishes Sixth at Navy Classic
ANAPOLIS, Md. Campbell
had four wrestlers place in the top-six, as they finished tied with
Davidson for sixth place, at the Navy Classic on Saturday. The
Camels had three wrestlers place fourth in their division and one
make sixth, finishing with 38 points in the competition. That was
enough to put them in a tie with Davidson for sixth place out of
eight teams at the meet.
There were plenty of pins in the heavyweight division of the
competition. Campbell's Jeremiah Fennell was pinned in 5:45, in his
opening match against Ed Prendergast of Navy. Fennell then
responded by pinning his next three opponents: Tim Franks
(Duquesne) in 3:21, Matt Holsopple (West Virginia) in the sudden
victory period and Keith English (McDaniel) in 1:20. In the third
place match Fennell fell to Mike D'Amico from Rutgers at the 2:05
mark.
Kelin Bidelspach went 2-2 to place fourth in the 141-pound
weight division. He started by beating Navy's David Tippett, before
falling to Steve Adamcsik from Rutgers. In the consolation bracket
Bidelspach defeated Henry Blue from Davidson 7-2, before dropping
the third-place game 12-8 to Navy's Spencer Manley.
In the 197-pound weight class Jason Cook for Campbell took
fourth place. After dropping his first match 19-7 to Andrew Adams,
he was able to pin Karim Mahmoud of Rutgers in 5:30. In the third
place match Cook dropped a 12-6 decision to Jared Villers of West
Virginia.
Campbell's Kyle Higgins took sixth in the 184 weight class.
The red-shirt freshman recovered from being pinned at the 1:46 mark
in his first match against Rudy Medinin of Rutgers, to reel off a
pair of wins. He beat Wil Carter of Davidson 9-3 and then Mike
Elshamy from Rutgers 4-1, before falling to George Mason's Matt
Moyer.
The Camels return to action on Dec. 26 at the Carolina Classic
in Chapel Hill, N.C.
