Campbell Wrestling in 28th Place After
Day One at Southern
Scuffle
GREENSBORO, N.C.
The Campbell wrestling team has 10.5 points and is 28th in the 32
team field at the 2005 Southern Scuffle. The team is ahead of Duke,
Davidson, Princeton and George Mason after day one at the
event.
Brent Poynter, led the Camels on day one with a 4-1 record.
Poynter a transfer from Spartanburg Methodist College, will wrestle
in the second day of the competition. He begins tomorrow in the
wrestle back four stage of the tournament.
Poynter's only loss came in the round of 32 match, where he
fell to No. 6 seed Deonte Penn of Edinboro. Penn is the No. 20
ranked wrestler in the country in the 165-pound weight class. The
Edinboro team is ranked No. 19 in the country in the USA Today /
Inter Mat Wrestling poll.
On the day the Camels came away with five individual wins
against a tough field. During the tournament the Camels faced five
wrestlers that were ranked in the top-25 in the country in their
respective weight classes.
In addition to Poynter's match against No. 20 Penn, James
Amsley (174) faced No. 1 ranked Ben Askern (Missouri); Trevour
Smith (125) fell to No. 13 Obenson Blanc (Lock Haven); Elliot
Berger (141) lost to No. 18 Kevin Artis (UNC Greensboro); Jeremiah
Fennel (HWT) faced No. 17 Ty Watterson (Oregon State).
The
current leader at the tournament is Minnesota, a team currently
ranked No. 3 in the USA Today / Inter Mat Wrestling
rankings.
The Camels will continue to wrestle in day two of the

Campbell wrestling team hosts its first home meet of the
season on Jan. 6. This will be the Camels first duel meet of the
season.
