Campbell Wrestling Finishes 28th at
Southern Scuffle
GREENSBORO, N.C.
The Campbell wrestling team scored 10.5 team points, to beat out
Duke, George Mason, Davidson and Princeton and finish
28th in the 32 team field in the Southern Scuffle hosted
Thursday and Friday by UNC Greensboro.
The Camels were led by Brent Poynter who finished 4-2 in the
event. Poynter pinned David Pelsing from Gardner Webb at the 1:56
mark in the round of 64. He then lost to nation's No. 20 ranked
wrestler in the 165-pound division, Deonte Penn, from Edinboro in
the round of 32.
Poynter went on to win his next three matches in the
wrestleback stages. He beat Obie Simpson from N.C. State 6-5 and
Adam Underwood from the Virginia Military Academy 10-1, before
advancing past Lehigh's Troy Letters on a medical forfeit win.
Poynter finished day one 4-1 before falling to Craig Dziewiatkowski from Navy by
pinfall.
The Camels also got wins from Trevour Smith and Jeremiah
Fennell. Smith finished 1-2 in the 125-pound weight division. He
beat Jim Porch from Rider in the round of 64 by a score of 6-4.
Fennell, a heavy-weight also went 1-2. He beat Ian Roncoroni from
Princeton 8-5 in the first wrestleback stage.
The No. 3 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers won the team title
with 192 team points edging out Missouri (149) and Cornell (131).
The tournament featured six teams and 58 wrestlers ranked in the
top-25 in the USA Today / Inter Mat Wrestling poll. For complete

At the end of the 2005 portion of the season, Fennell and
Poynter lead the team with 10 individual wins each. The Camels have
not wrestled a dual, meet but finished tied for sixth at the Navy
Classic, to go along with the 28th place at the Southern
Scuffle. The Camels next match is the home opener against UNC
Greensboro on Jan. 6 in Carter Gym.
