Campbell Raps 19 Hits in 9-8 Baseball Win Over UNC Pembroke
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Campbell had a season-high 19 hits and defeated
UNC Pembroke 9-8 Wednesday at Taylor Field.
Joe
Anthonsen, Tim Holt, David Forbes and Luke Reiland each collected
three hits and the Camels (7-2) won their sixth game in the last
seven outings.
Campbell
took a 7-3 lead after four innings, but UNCP (13-7) rallied to tie
the score twice. The Braves, ranked number-23 nationally in
Division II by Collegiate Baseball, had the tying runner on in the
ninth inning before Forbes gunned down pinch-runner Kenly Locklear
at second on a stolen base attempt to end the game.
Lemmie
Barwick (3-0) earned the win in relief for the Camels. Sandy Jacobs
(3-2) suffered the loss in relief for UNC Pembroke after giving up
an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.
Anthonsen
finished the day 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI, while Forbes
and Alston Hatch each homered for the Fighting Camels, who raised
their team batting average to .359 on the years.
Cole
Franks, Jason Morales and Quincy Wyche each had a pair of hits in
UNCP's 10-hit attack.
Campbell's
four-run fourth staked the Camels to a 7-3 edge. With one out and
the bases full, Anthonsen tripled over the head of UNCP
centerfielder Robbie Redic, then Holt delivered an RBI hit through
a drawn-in infield.
The
Braves battled back with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth
frames. Morales' two-run hit off Camel reliever Lincoln Smith
pulled UNCP within 7-5 in the fifth.
Aaron
Perkins' RBI hit pulled UNCP within 7-6 in the sixth, then Redic
scored the tying run from third when Perkins was out trying to
steal second.
Hatch,
a junior from Fuquay-Varina, launched his first career home run to
lead off the seventh and chase UNCP starter Nolan Johnson. Johnson
worked 6-plus innings and gave up eight runs on 14 hits with one
walk and one strikeout.
UNCP
then tied the score in the top of the eighth when Wyche and Redic
singled off Camel left-hander Tyler Sexton, then moved up on a
sacrifice bunt by Justin Bowman. Barwick came on in relief and
intentionally walked Zach Conaway to load the bases. Franks
followed with a sacrifice fly to center that Campbell's Jeff Blick
had trouble retrieving from his glove and Wyche scored the tying
run without a throw.
Blick
then led off the ninth by beating out an infield chopper to
shortstop, and took second when Chris Beck's throw sailed past
first base. Anthonsen grounded to second to push Blick ahead, and
Holt followed with a bloop single over a drawn-in infield for what
proved to be the winning run.
In
the UNCP ninth, Beck beat out an infield hit to short, but Forbes
ended the contest when he threw out pinch-runner Locklear on a
steal attempt at second.
Campbell
plays Friday at High Point in a 3:00 p.m., start, then hosts the
Panthers for a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m. [ Box Score ]
