Campbell Finishes In Fourth-Place Tie at Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship
FRANKLIN,
TENN. Matt McIntyre earned a place on the all-tournament
squad and Campbell University finished in a fourth-place tie
Wednesday at the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golf
Championship.
The
Fighting Camels finished the event at eight-over 860, tied with
Mercer, 14 strokes behind team champion Georgia State. The Panthers
shot an even-par 284 on Wednesday to finish the event at six-under
846, overtaking 36-hole leader North Florida. UNF was second at 850
strokes, one better than Central Florida (851) in the 12-school
event.
Campbell
led the event after a first-round 276 on Monday, but Georgia State
shot par or better (281-281-284) on all three days to earn team
honors.
Duncan
Stewart of Jacksonville won individual honors at nine-under 204
after a final round, one-over-par 72. Ben Leong of UCF and Ben
Taylor of Georgia State tied for second at seven-under 206, while
Andreas Hoegberg of UCF was third at 207.
McIntyre
and first-round leader Miguel Ordonez of North Florida completed
the event at five-under 208 to tie for fifth individually. A junior
from Garland, N.C., McIntyre shot a two-under 69 (tied with
Hoegberg for the day's low round) on Wednesday to complete an event
where he recorded the three best rounds of his collegiate
career.
The
2000 North Carolina 1-A state men's golf champion at West Bladen
High School, McIntyre shot 68-71-69 on the par-71, 6759-yard
Legends Club layout, which will host an LPGA event next week.
McIntyre led all 60 golfers in the tourney in par-3 scoring by
playing those holes three-under-par. He was second in par-4 scoring
(one-under) and made 13 birdies over 54 holes, to tie for
fourth-best in the field.
Campbell's
54-hole total of 860 strokes marked the squad's best showing of the
year, 22 strokes better than the 882 the team turned in last
November on a par-72 layout at the 49er Collegiate Classic in
Huntersville, N.C.
While
McIntyre played all three rounds at par or better, no other
Fighting Camel golfer was able to match the feat for the final
round of the event. Sophomore Kyle Spahr tied for 22nd place at
four-over 217, while freshman Fredric Sundberg finished the event
in a 33rd-place tie at six-over 219. Junior Johan Rydheim was 36th
(221) and freshman Isak Pettersen 48th (228).
