Nitz Scores Twice but Camels
Fall 4-2 Away to East
Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C.-Mary Nitz scored twice
but East Carolina prove too tough an opponent as the Campbell women
fell 4-2 on the road. The loss drops the Camels to 2-4-0 while the
Pirates get their second win of the season and move to 2-5-0. Two
of those five losses came last weekend when the Pirates traveled to
Big XII country and played two close matches on the road against
No. 14 Texas A&M (3-0) and Oklahoma (2-1 OT2).
Nitz, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., put the Camels ahead
early as she beat ECU keeper Amber Campbell from 25 yards out at
5:28 into the match, to score her first goal of the season.
The Pirates didn't stay down for long and leveled the match at
the 14:35 mark, when Meghan McCallion scored her third goal of the
season. McCallion's initial shot was blocked by a Campbell defender
but the senior scored the rebound to move into a tie as ECU's top
career goal-scorer with 33 goals for the Pirates.
In the second half ECU doubled Campbell's shot output 8-4 and
netted three straight goals.
The first goal of the second half came at 58:47, from an East
Carolina throw-in by Jami Dickerson, the ball was flicked into the
area by Melissa Penny's header and finished by freshman Sarah
Biggars.
Penny would assist on the next goal also, as her corner-kick
found Allison Howell who finished past Campbell goalkeeper Samar
Azem in the 76th minute to put the Pirates in front 3-1.
The assist was Penny's third of the season to go with three goals,
making her the point leader this season for the Pirates.
The Pirates added another goal to go to 4-1, when McCallion
turned provider as her cross found Kate Lowe who finished past
Azem.
The Camels kept fighting, and Nitz was able to score a
consolation goal in the 88th minute as she intercepted a
wayward pass from a Pirate defender and blasted the ball past the
ECU net-minder from 20 yards out.
Nitz's brace represents the first time that any CU player has
scored more than one goal in a game this season and also makes her
the team's points leader with four.
Campbell opens Atlantic Sun play next week as it travels to
Mercer Thursday night for a 7:00 kick-off and to Stetson on
Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. match. The Camels will return home on for
a two game homestand beginning with Belmont on Sept. 29 followed by
Lipscomb on Oct. 1.
