Chris
Wiley and Brad Schrock Hired as Campbell Baseball Assistant Coaches
BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Head coach Chip Smith has hired Chris Wiley and Brad Schrock
as assistant coaches with the Campbell University baseball
program. Wiley, a 2003 Campbell graduate, will serve as assistant
coach and recruiting coordinator. Schrock, who spent the 2006
season as a volunteer assistant with the Fighting Camels, will take
over pitching coach duties.
Wiley replaces Kent
Cox, who accepted a similar position at Gardner-Webb. Schrock
assumes pitching coach responsibilities after the resignation of
Sean Fleming.
"We're excited to have
Chris back home. As a player, he was like having a coach on the
field. He played for a great high school coach, Doyle Whitfield,
who had one of the top programs in the state. Chris is an
up-and-coming young coach, who is a good teacher of the game," said
Smith, who is entering his 12th year as head coach of the
Camels.
Wiley spent the 2006
season at Division II Limestone College, where he served as
pitching coach. A native of Dudley, N.C., Wiley coached Saints
all-region pitcher Kevin Pucetas, who was chosen by the San
Francisco Giants in the 17th round of the 2006 Major League
Baseball amateur draft.
Prior to his year at
Limestone, Wiley served two seasons (2004-2005) as assistant coach
at Louisburg Junior College. During his stint at LC, Wiley helped
lead the Hurricanes to an 89-31 record and two NJCAA Region X
championships. Three of the LC players Wiley coached went on to
join the Fighting Camel program Mike Ange, Ricky Howard and
Justin Phillips.
In addition to his
work at Limestone and Louisburg, Wiley has been active as a coach
in the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate league that spans
the Carolinas and Virginia. He has served as head coach of the
Gastonia Grizzlies for the last two seasons, guiding the club to a
second-half West Division title and berth in the 2005 Pettit Cup
playoffs.
"Chris and Brad have
had an opportunity to work together this summer coaching in the
Coastal Plain League," said Smith. "Chris has experience as a head
coach there, and Brad as his pitching coach. They've had to bring
guys together from all over the country, form a team, create unity,
and that should help make us a better coaching staff."
Wiley, who was an
assistant at Gastonia in 2004, has also spent time as an associate
scout for the Kansas City Royals. He also served as an assistant
coach with the Carolina Black Sox of the Southern Collegiate League
during the summer of 2003.
He played at Campbell
from 1999-2003 and was a key contributor in Campbell's 2001 season
where the Camels set a school record with 33 victories. During
that 2001 season, Wiley smacked a walk-off grand slam home run vs.
Duke at Taylor Field. He tied his career high with six RBI in that
contest.
During his career,
Wiley saw action in 166 games at catcher, first base and designated
hitter, batted .289 and compiled 61 RBI. He served as team captain
in 2003 and was the team's Coaches Award winner in 1999 after
finishing second on the club with a .354 batting average. He was a
member of Campbell's 2000 Atlantic Sun Conference tournament
runner-up team as well as the 2001 squad that finished third in the
A-Sun regular season standings.
Wiley played in the
Coastal Plain League with the Florence RedWolves and the
Fayetteville SwampDogs. He earned his bachelor's degree in sport
management from Campbell in May 2003.
Schrock is no stranger
to the Fighting Camel program, after helping lead the 2006 squad to
a berth in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. During his year
as volunteer assistant, Schrock was in charge of strength workouts
and video analysis for pitchers, while assisting in all other
phases of the coaching operation. He has also served as pitching
coach on Wiley's staff with the Gastonia Grizzlies during the
summer of 2006.
"Last year Brad had an
opportunity to work some in our pitching staff in more of a
development phase," said Coach Smith. "He already knows our staff
and has a very good rapport with the players. He brings a lot of
energy and enthusiasm to the staff, and the kids will respond well
to that. He is a student of the game, and I think that he will
give us the boost that we need with our pitchers."
Prior to joining the
Camel staff, Schrock served for two seasons as pitching coach at
his alma mater, Carson-Newman College, in Jefferson City, Tenn.
While at Carson-Newman, Schrock guided the pitching staff to a
top-50 finish in ERA among all Division II programs. That staff
featured the pitcher who led the South Atlantic Conference in
ERA.
Schrock also served as the pitching coach at Glen Oaks
Community College for the 2003 season, where six of his pitchers
signed senior college scholarships.
As a player, Schrock was an all-state and all-tournament
selection at Glen Oaks. He helped lead his team to a third place
finish in the 2000 NJCAA World Series. The Goshen, Ind. native was
an all-conference, all-region and all-region tournament selection
as a sophomore in 2000.
Schrock went on to Carson-Newman, where he helped lead the
Eagles to a SAC championship and NCAA regional appearance in 2002.
While at CNU, Schrock was a part of the pitching staff that twice
led the South Atlantic Conference in ERA.
A 2002 graduate of Carson-Newman, Schrock holds a B.S. in
leisure services and outdoor recreation with a minor in management.
He earned his master's in education from Lincoln Memorial
University in December 2005. Schrock is married to the former
Megan Ashley McBee, who is attending pharmacy school at
Campbell.
