Campbell Wrestling Drops 32-19 Decision to The Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C.
Campbell won four of the 10 matches in the dual meet against The
Citadel, but the Fighting Camels still fell 32-19 on the road. With
the loss Campbell drops to 0-2 in dual matches, while The Citadel
improves to 3-2.
In the team's second dual match of the season, the Camels
battled back twice to tie the score, but could not overcome the
Bulldogs. The Citadel got in front early when Matt Bullwinkle
pinned Elliot Berger at the 3:35 mark in the 141-pound division.
However, the Camels Steve Wiktorek would level the match in the 149
division, when he pinned Nicholas Orio at the 5:56 mark.
The Citadel regained the lead in the 157-pound division, with
Derik Neitz beating Nick Amato by a major decision 13-4. That would
be the same score in the 165-pound match, as Campbell's Brent
Poynter beat Dan Thompson to level the team score at 10.
However, the Bulldogs won the next three matches at the 171,
184 and 197-pound weight classes to take a 26-10 lead that they
would not relinquish.
The Camels also got wins from Jeremiah Fennell and Richie
Apolinar. Fennell downed John Buck 2-1 in the heavy weight
division, while Apolinar kept his record perfect in dual meets. The
freshman recorded his second pin of the dual meet season at the
3:35 mark, against Charlie Hopkins in the 125-pound division.
For The Citadel, the win over Campbell completed a sweep in a
home double-header. The Bulldogs defeated Duke 28-12 in a meet held
prior to wrestling the Camels.
Campbell will return to action Jan. 17, wrestling an away meet
at Gardner-Webb at 6:00.
