SAVANNAH, Ga.-Campbell defeated
Savannah State 3-0 (30-17, 30-21, 30-18) Thursday night in a
non-conference road tilt. The Camels had 17 service aces for the
second-consecutive match, a number which ranks third all-time in
Campbell history.
Campbell improves to 11-13 on the season matching the 2004 team for
the most wins since 2001, while the Tigers fall to 0-19.
The Camels entered the match ranked 19th in the nation
averaging 2.29 aces per game and after tonight's match would find
themselves ranked fifth with a 2.41 average. Senior Rachel Templin
led the way for Campbell with six aces, while freshman Ashley Weers
registered five after entering ranked 12th in the
country with a 0.63 per game average. The Littleton, Colo. native
would be tied for eighth with 0.67 aces per game after tonight's
performance and has recorded 11 aces over her past six games
(1.83).
Sophomore Femi Alabi led the Camels offensive attack with 13
kills, while Templin added 10 kills and a match-high .421 attack
percentage. Both were active at the net defensive with a combined
five blocks.
Leah Fitzpatrick led the Tigers with four kills for the match;
they finished with just 16 total kills and a -.066 attack
percentage. This is the second-straight Campbell's opponent has hit
for a negative percentage; the Camels held Winston-Salem State to
-.031 hitting last week.
Senior Sarah Dillon led all players with 28 assists on 32 attempts
and also had four digs and an ace. Freshman Jessica Gleba had 14 of
the Camels other 16 assists as CU continued to run its two setter
attack successfully.
Campbell was led defensively by freshman libero Melissa Harvey who
picked up 13 digs and also had a pair of service aces. Jamilla
Joseph was the only Savannah State player in double-figures in any
stat category with 10 digs.
This is the Camels second victory over Savannah State this season.
CU defeated the Tigers 3-0 back on August 26 in the season-opening
Georgia Southern Invitational.
Campbell continues its three match in three days stretch Friday
night in a crucial Atlantic Sun contest at Jacksonville (12-11, 3-2
A-Sun) at 7:30 pm. The Camels are 2-4 in the conference with three
matches remaining and a one-game lead over Mercer for the final
spot in the A-Sun Tournament. Campbell wraps up the weekend on
Saturday at North Florida (13-14, 4-1).
