Campbell Pulls Out Thrilling, 24-21
Victory Over Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, N.C.- With the Camels
trailing by three going into the last match of the dual, Steve
Wiktorek came through in the clutch, winning his second match of
the year to give Campbell a 24-21 victory over Belmont Abbey in
wrestling action Wednesday night.
With
Campbell needing at least a decision victory to tie the match,
Wiktorek left no doubt by pinning Justin Bates just over two
minutes into the first period. The win gave Wiktorek his first pin
of the year, while giving the Camels their first dual victory on
the season.
The dual started out shaky for the Camels, as they dropped
three of the first four matches, falling behind 15-3. Jeremiah
Fennell got things rolling for the Camels as he posted his fourth
victory on the season by pinning Chris Schram to bring the score to
15-9.
After a Crusader decision victory, David Wise provided a
much-needed boost to the Camel squad. Trailing 3-2 in third period,
Wise recorded a two-point takedown with three seconds left in the
match to give him a dramatic, 4-3 victory.
Kelin Bidelspach kept the momentum on CU's side with his
fourth victory of the year, pinning Patrick McCabe at 6:36 of the
third period to tie the match at 18-all.Chris Mazzatta lost to
Appolon Jean-Paul by a score of 8-3 to set up Wiktorek's late-dual
heroics.
Campbell is off for finals until
December 14 when they travel to Greensboro to take on the Spartans
of UNC-Greensboro. Start time for the dual is set for
2:00.
