BUIES CREEK,
N.C. - Campbell University sophomore Femi Alabi has been named to
the ESPN The Magazine / Academic All-District 3 Volleyball
University Division second team by the College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA) the organization announced
Thursday.
A starter at outside hitter, Alabi has a 4.00 grade point average
in advanced computer science.
The 6-foot-3,
Jos Nigeria native leads the team in kills (350) and is second on
the team in kills per game (3.30), hitting percentage (.339),
blocks (115) and blocks per game (1.08). Alabi ranks fourth in the
Atlantic Sun in blocks, fifth in the hitting percentage and
10th in kills per game.
Alabi has almost nine and a half times the number of kills and over
seven and a half times the number of blocks she did her freshman
campaign. She has posted double-figure kills in 11 of her last 12
matches, including 19 or more kills in eight of those 11. During
that 11-match stretch, Alabi is averaging a lofty 4.8 kills per
game, which would shatter the CU single-season record by almost
half a kill.
Earlier this season, Alabi posted the third-highest single-game
hitting percentage in Campbell history hitting .714 with 11 kills
and one error in 14 attempts against Winston-Salem State. She has
hit over .400 in 11 matches and has 18 double-figure kill matches
over the course of the season. Her season hitting percentage will
go down as the second highest all-time behind senior Rachel Templin
who is hitting .345 heading into CU's final match of the season
tonight.
Alabi is just the fourth Fighting Camel volleyball player to
receive CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and the first since
Crystal Brim received it for the second time in 2002.
Campbell student-athletes have earned Academic All-America®
honors from CoSIDA 13 times since 1988, most recently last spring
when Michael Priest was selected in baseball. CU athletes have
gained Academic All-District 3 recognition in each of the last 13
years, including this season with men's soccer's Devin Sheppard
receiving First Team honors for the second-consecutive
season.
Alabi was one of two Atlantic Sun volleyball players to gain
Academic All-District honors. Sarah Buhr of East Tennessee State
was selected to the Academic All-District 4 second team.
CoSIDA's 1800 members in the United States and Canada nominate
players for ESPN The Magazine / Academic All-America®
recognition. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a
3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve
on his or her team.
CoSIDA members vote on the all-district teams, then a national
panel selects the Academic All-America squads. District 3 includes
all NCAA Division I schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina,
South Carolina and Virginia.
