CONWAY, S.C.-Alisha Dill scored a
career-high 33 points to lead Coastal Carolina to a 58-33 victory
over Campbell Monday night in women's basketball action. Dill
entered the game as the nation's second-leading scorer averaging
22.8 points per game.
The
33 points for the Lady Camels (2-5) is the fewest scored in the
35-year history of Campbell women's basketball. Coastal improves to
4-2 on the young season despite shooting just 37.8 percent from the
floor.
Marlena Murphy accounted for almost half of Campbell's point total
finishing with a career-high 16 points while pulling down 11
rebounds for her third double-double of the season and eighth of
her career.
Freshman Gara Bell also had a career-high point total for the Lady
Camels with 10 on 4-of-6 shooting while grabbing five rebounds.
Maggie Rich was the only other Campbell player to hit a field goal
finishing with five points.
Dill connected on 13-of-26 from the floor and 5-of-13 for her
three-point tries. Calisha Yates was the only other Chanticleer in
double-figures finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Campbell outrebounded Coastal 43-42 marking the sixth opponent in
seven games this season that the Lady Camels have had an edge on
the boards.
The Lady Camels shot 20.0 percent (12-60) from the floor despite
the combined 10-for-17 shooting from Murphy and Bell. Campbell's
guards were held scoreless after entering the game contributing 51
percent of the scoring offense of the season.
Coastal led 22-11 at the break behind 12 of Dill's points. The
Lady Camels were held scoreless for just under 10 minutes in the
opening half. Bell converted a layup with 12:38 to play and CU
would not score again until Rich hit a three with 2:41 remaining in
the half.
The Lady Chants extended their halftime lead to 20 points on a
three by Dill at the 9:07 mark after CU cut the lead back down to
11 with a pair of free throws by Murphy at the 12:43 mark, who has
now made 15 of her last 19 free throws and has scored in double
figures in six of seven games this season.
The Lady Camels play their final home game of 2006 Saturday
afternoon hosting High Point (4-3) at 4:00 pm. The start time has
been pushed back from the original 1:00 tipoff due to Campbell's
graduation ceremonies that afternoon. Fans who bring three canned
goods to the game will receive free admission.
