BOCA RATON, Fla.-Cristal Randolph
scored 17 points leading Florida Atlantic to an 87-52 victory over
Campbell in the opening round of the FAU New Year's Classic Friday
evening in FAU Arena.
Gara Bell led the Lady Camels (3-7, 1-0 A-Sun) with a career-high
14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Campbell was playing its
first game since a victory over UNC Wilmington back on December 18
and showed some rust committing 38 turnovers and shooting just 33.3
percent from the floor.
This was the first meeting between the two schools as
non-conference foes. Florida Atlantic was a member of the Atlantic
Sun before bolting to the Sun Belt this season.
Mistoria Brown and Brittney Crenshaw joined Randolph in double
figures for Florida Atlantic (3-11, 0-3 Sun Belt) with 14 points
apiece. The Lady Owls shot 51.7 percent from the floor after
entering the game shooting just 34.9 percent on the season. FAU's
percentage was helped by a handful of layups off Lady Camel
turnovers. The Owls scored 47 points off CU turnovers and had 19
fast break points.
Adrienne Rieley's jumper at the 16:03 mark in the first half gave
the Lady Camels their largest lead of the game at 10-5. FAU rolled
off 13-straight points over the next six minutes grabbing an 18-10
lead with 12:23 to play. Campbell closed the gap back down to four
with a basket and pair of free throws from Bell.
The Owls took charge of the game over the remaining of the half
with a 30-10 run. Over a 15 minute stretch in the first half, Bell
was the only Lady Camel to score; a three-pointer (the first of the
half for CU) by Kristin Graham with 31 seconds remaining broke up
the drought.
Following the opening minute of the second half, Campbell was not
able to cut the deficit under 20 points for the remainder of the
game.
Shuteamia Brayboy had nine assists and five of FAU's 24 steals,
but committed seven turnovers.
The Lady Owls became just the second team this season to
outrebound Campbell holding a slim 37-36 advantage on the glass.
Brown led the Owls with seven rebounds, while Marlena Murphy pulled
down five behind Bell's eight for CU. Murphy finished with just
four points on the game after entering the game with double-doubles
in her past four contests.
Campbell returns to the court tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm in a
rematch against High Point in the consolation game of the
tournament. High Point defeated CU 89-74 in Buies Creek on December
16. Letitia Dickson led the Lady Camels with 21 points and Murphy
netted 20 in the loss. Leslie Cook paced the Panthers with a
career-high 29 points in the first meeting. Ohio, who defeated High
Point 82-70, meets FAU at 3:00 in the championship game.
