BUIES CREEK, N.C.
- Josh Elliott scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead
Campbell to a 4-1 win over visiting Richmond Tuesday night in a
men's soccer exhibition at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Camel freshman Vince Petrasso tallied a pair of goals in his first
outing with the Orange & Black and Julian Fulton added two
assists as the Camels recovered from a 1-0 half-time deficit with
two strikes in an 8:17 span early in the second half.
Campbell continues its pre-season
schedule Friday in a 4:00 p.m. kick-off at Elon before hosting its
annual Alumni match on Saturday at 3:00.
The visiting Spiders jumped in front in the 20th minute on Callum
Thomas' goal. Jordan Evans sent a corner kick into the box that was
eventually controlled by Alex Naime, who curled a left footed pass
to Thomas. The junior from Aberdeen, Scotland beat Camel keeper
Aaron Johnson from about 10 yards.
Campbell nearly equalized in the 30th minute, but Richmond keeper
Matt Cully was able to parry Richard Jata's 25-yard curling direct
kick.
The equalizer came just 6:03 into the second period when Elliott
and Petrasso linked on a pair of passes down the left flank. The
Canadian U-20 National Team pool member then unleashed a
right-footed effort from 20 yards that found the upper right corner
of Spider back up keeper Eric Sciocchetti's net.
Petrasso, a midfielder from Woodbridge, Ontario, again scored from
just inside the box just 8:17 later for what proved to be the
winning goal. Julian Fulton fed Alex Bruemmer down the right side,
and the Camel junior dribbled deep into the area before squaring a
low ball across the box to Petrasso, whose first touch again hit
the net.
Just over five minutes later, Elliott notched his first goal of the
pre-season off Fulton's assist. In the 84th minute, Chris Price's
serve found Elliott alone at the back post and the junior from
Salisbury, Md., headed the ball inside the right post for the final
tally.
Campbell finished with a 10-5 edge in
shots, scoring four times off six second-half attempts. Cully and
Schiocchetti each had one save while splitting the game in half for
the Spiders. Johnson finished with three saves in 70 minutes of
action before giving way to freshman Bryce Kenny in the Camel
nets.
