FLORENCE,
S.C. -- Junior Ashley Fortune scored a pair of first-half goals to
lead Francis Marion to a 2-0 exhibition win over Campbell, Thursday
afternoon (Aug. 17) in women's soccer action.
Fortune opened the scoring at 18:46 with a 10-yard shot into an
open goal. Jody Rhoderick started the play with a long pass up the
right sideline to freshman Angela Salem, who crossed the ball to
Fortune.
The margin doubled when Kiersten Nedervelt sent a long pass over
the top to Fortune and the Bothell, Wash., native scored on a
12-yard shot from a tough angle on the left side.
Francis Marion out-shot Campbell 13-3, including an 8-0 margin in
the opening half. Senior goalkeeper Samar Azem recorded six saves
for Campbell. Junior Jacque Sutphin played the first 72:30 in goal
for FMU, while freshman Emily Brandenburg played the final
17:30.
Campbell hosts its Alumni Game on Saturday at noon before
entertaining Guilford in its pre-season finale on Monday at 7:00
p.m. The Camels open the regular season on Aug. 25 at Elon.
