NORFOLK, VA- Katie Watson broke a
0-0 tie in the 61st minute en route to a 3-0 Old
Dominion victory over Campbell at Old Dominion Stadium in Norfolk
on Saturday night.
Caroline Brown and Heather Vaughan added insurance goals, and
Shavon Knight contributed two assists for the unbeaten Monarchs,
who are currently ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region in the
NSCAA/Adidas regional rankings.
Old Dominion threatened to take the lead throughout the first
half, but the Campbell defense held its ground. In the
23rd minute Janna Pearson fired a shot from the top left
side of the box that hit the crossbar before being cleared by Camel
defenders, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.
The Camel defense withstood several Monarch rushes throughout the
night, with keeper Samar Azem making several sprawling saves to
preserve the scoreless tie. Old Dominion finally broke through when
Shavon Knight set up the deciding Watson goal from the top of the
box.
Seven minutes later Knight recorded her second assist of the
night, sending a cross from near the right corner to just outside
the left post where Caroline Brown blasted a shot past the diving
Azem, making it 2-0.
ODU's third goal came with just over two minutes remaining. After
Azem punched out a Monarch crossing attempt, Heather Vaughan
corralled the loose ball and scored from the top of the box for the
Monarchs final goal.
The Camel offense was held in check, as Old Dominion out shot the
Camels 26-0, putting 15 shots on goal. Samar Azem made several
tough stops in accumulating 12 saves on the night.
Old Dominion will host Liberty on Monday, while the Camels will
open up Atlantic Sun play next weekend in Nashville taking on
Belmont at 6:30 cdt Thursday and Lipscomb at 1:00 cdt.
