WASHINGTON D.C. - Brent Poynter was the lone Camel grappler to
win a match as Campbell (1-7-1, 0-1CAA) tied Delaware State 22-22
and fell to American 53-0 Wednesday afternoon in the nation's
capital.
Poynter, who tied for the team lead in wins, was the only Camel
wrestler to not win by forfeit, as the senior scored a 10-2, major
decision victory over Delaware State's Brandon Gardner. The win
brought Poynter's overall record to 8-7 on the season.
The Camels squared off against Delaware State in the first dual of
the day. Richie Apolinar and Trevour Smith received forfeit
victories to stake the Camels to a 12-0 lead. Two tech fall defeats
and a double forfeit at 157 lbs. left the score at 12-8 CU. After
Poynter's victory at 165 lbs., another tech fall loss, and a Camel
forfeit the score stood at 18-16 Delaware State. In the last match
of the dual Rob Yoder dropped an 11-3, major decision at 197 lbs.
to give DSU a 22-16 lead. However, the Hornets had to forfeit the
last match, knotting the final score at 22-22
CU's second match pitted them against the American University
Eagles. American jumped to an early 19-0 lead by winning the first
four matches of the dual. The Eagles, who received votes in the
latest Intermat Wrestling poll, never looked back, as they received
three more victories to go along with three Camel forfeits to
shutout Campbell 53-0.
The Camels are off until Friday, January 19th when they travel to
Farifax, Va. to compete in the important CAA Duals. Friday's
matches start at 1:00 p.m. while Saturday's action begins at 11:00
a.m.
