Tennessee State used an 18-7 run midway through the second half to
pull away to an 87-66 victory over Campbell Thursday night in
Atlantic Sun action in Carter Gym.
Freshman Siarre Evans led the Lady Bucs (8-7, 4-1 A-Sun) with 20
points and seven rebounds, while also dishing out four assists and
grabbing three steals. Michele DeVault netted 17 points, Brooke
Wilhoit had 16 points, eight assists and seven steals and Jenny
Norman added 15 points.
Marlena Murphy paced Campbell (3-11, 1-3) with 16 points on
8-of-11 shooting from the floor and pulled down six rebounds, five
on the offensive glass. Octavia Blackwell added 13 points and six
assists, while Adrienne Rieley posted her second double-double of
the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Murphy pulled the Lady Camels within six at 57-51 with 11:59 to
play in the second half before the Lady Bucs opened up a 17-point
advantage with their 18-7 run that spanned almost five minutes.
The Lady Camels outshot ETSU hitting an even 50.0 percent (26-52)
from the floor, while the Lady Bucs connected at a 44.4 percent
(32-72) clip. ETSU caught the Lady Camels from the three-point line
hitting 8-of-16, while Campbell was just 1-of-9. Campbell shot 60.7
percent from the floor in the first half hitting 17-of-28, but hit
just 9-of-24 in the second half for 37.5 percent.
ETSU had 20 steals on the game on 26 Campbell turnovers and became
just the fourth team to outrebound CU with a 40-32 advantage on the
glass, including a 22-13 mark on the offensive glass.
Campbell jumped out to a 14-9 lead on a put back from Murphy off a
Taylor Oliver missed three-pointer at the 13:40 mark in the first
half. ETSU went on a 25-13 run over the next 10 minutes grabbing a
seven-point lead at 34-27 with just over four minutes left.
Letitia Dickson pulled Campbell within three points on a driving
layup with just nine seconds remaining in the half. ETSU drove back
down the court and after two missed shots Norman hit a layup that
appeared to come after the buzzer, but was allowed to grab a 42-37
lead at the break.
The Lady Camels will look to end a five-game losing skid Saturday
afternoon at 1:00 in Carter Gym when they host Kennesaw State (6-9,
2-3). Campbell won both meetings last season in the Lady Owls first
season in the A-Sun. Gardner-Webb defeated Kennesaw State 52-44
tonight in Boiling Springs, N.C.
