MACON, Ga.-Marlena Murphy scored 20
points and pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds to lead Campbell
to a 67-41 victory at Mercer in Atlantic Sun women's basketball
action Saturday afternoon in the University Center.
Murphy hit 5-of-11 from the floor and converted 6-of-8 from the
free throw line for her eighth double-double of the season. The win
snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Camels (4-13, 2-5
A-Sun).
The Bears (1-17, 0-7) were led by 14 points from TaShera Lewis who
fouled out at the 8:30 mark of the second half.
Campbell dominated the glass outrebounding the Bears by a 45-27
margin. Octavia Blackwell finished just one rebound shy of a
double-double with 11 points and a career-best nine rebounds. Gara
Bell added six boards and six points to the Lady Camels'
effort.
Letitia Dickson continued her torrid three-point shooting
connecting on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and finished with 12
points and four assists. Dickson has made 10 of her last 16
three-point attempts on the season spanning three games.
After Campbell extended its 14-point halftime lead to 18 after its
first two possession of the second half, Mercer rolled off
six-straight points cutting the Camel lead down to 41-29 with 14:52
to play.
The teams traded three-pointers and then Campbell ended the game
on a 21-9 run over the final 11:21.
The Lady Camels shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the floor and 46.2
percent (6-13) from three-point range. Campbell held Mercer to just
28.0 percent (14-50) from the floor and 12.5 percent (2-16) from
three-point range, both are season lows by a Lady Camel
opponent.
Campbell took control of the game with a 21-6 run spanning over 10
minutes of the first half turning a 16-13 lead into a 37-19
advantage. Murphy scored the first six points of the run and
finished the first half with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Blackwell contributed the next four points of the run and finished
the opening 20 minutes with seven points and seven rebounds.
Mercer jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the opening two minutes of
the game, but the Lady Camels scored seven-straight points, four
from Murphy, to grab a 9-6 lead. Lewis scored eight of the Bears
first nine points of the game, but was held to just one bucket the
remainder of the half.
The Lady Camels took a 37-23 lead into the break after shooting
56.5 percent (13-23) from the floor and 60.0 percent (3-5) from
three-point range. Mercer connected on just 9-of-26 for 34.6
percent and missed all six of its three-point attempts.
Campbell played the majority of the game without its
second-leading scorer and rebounder, Adrienne Rieley, who was
injured just two minutes into the game.
The Lady Camels return home for a four-game homestand beginning on
Thursday night at 5:45 against Lipscomb (5-11, 3-3) and then
league-leading Belmont (12-4, 6-0) on Saturday at 1:00. Both games
are doubleheaders with the Campbell men who play North Florida and
Jacksonville.
