Campbell Gets Over the Hump with 67-41 Victory at Mercer Saturday Afternoon

MACON, Ga.-Marlena Murphy scored 20 points and pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds to lead Campbell to a 67-41 victory at Mercer in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in the University Center.

Murphy hit 5-of-11 from the floor and converted 6-of-8 from the free throw line for her eighth double-double of the season. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Camels (4-13, 2-5 A-Sun).

The Bears (1-17, 0-7) were led by 14 points from TaShera Lewis who fouled out at the 8:30 mark of the second half.

Campbell dominated the glass outrebounding the Bears by a 45-27 margin. Octavia Blackwell finished just one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and a career-best nine rebounds. Gara Bell added six boards and six points to the Lady Camels' effort.
Letitia Dickson continued her torrid three-point shooting connecting on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and finished with 12 points and four assists. Dickson has made 10 of her last 16 three-point attempts on the season spanning three games.

After Campbell extended its 14-point halftime lead to 18 after its first two possession of the second half, Mercer rolled off six-straight points cutting the Camel lead down to 41-29 with 14:52 to play.

The teams traded three-pointers and then Campbell ended the game on a 21-9 run over the final 11:21.

The Lady Camels shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the floor and 46.2 percent (6-13) from three-point range. Campbell held Mercer to just 28.0 percent (14-50) from the floor and 12.5 percent (2-16) from three-point range, both are season lows by a Lady Camel opponent.

Campbell took control of the game with a 21-6 run spanning over 10 minutes of the first half turning a 16-13 lead into a 37-19 advantage. Murphy scored the first six points of the run and finished the first half with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Blackwell contributed the next four points of the run and finished the opening 20 minutes with seven points and seven rebounds.

Mercer jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the opening two minutes of the game, but the Lady Camels scored seven-straight points, four from Murphy, to grab a 9-6 lead. Lewis scored eight of the Bears first nine points of the game, but was held to just one bucket the remainder of the half.

The Lady Camels took a 37-23 lead into the break after shooting 56.5 percent (13-23) from the floor and 60.0 percent (3-5) from three-point range. Mercer connected on just 9-of-26 for 34.6 percent and missed all six of its three-point attempts.

Campbell played the majority of the game without its second-leading scorer and rebounder, Adrienne Rieley, who was injured just two minutes into the game.

The Lady Camels return home for a four-game homestand beginning on Thursday night at 5:45 against Lipscomb (5-11, 3-3) and then league-leading Belmont (12-4, 6-0) on Saturday at 1:00. Both games are doubleheaders with the Campbell men who play North Florida and Jacksonville.
