BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Coming off a fall campaign when the teams
combined for five tournament victories, Campbell University's men's
and women's programs rank among the nation's top-10 in a number of
statistical categories, according to Golfstat.
"We had our best semester since I've been a part of the program,"
said Crooks, a NGCA Hall of Fame member who is in his 16th year in
charge of the Campbell men and 15th year at the helm of the women's
team. "We are in a situation where both of these teams have done
extraordinary things."
The Fighting Camels own a 287 team average through five
tournaments, the eighth-best score vs. par in the country,
according to Golfstat. Coach John Crooks' men have a 72.98 stroke
average following their win in the Old Dominion Seascape
Collegiate, Oct. 30-31.
Junior Fredric Sundberg owns a 71.4 stroke average to lead the
team. He posted three top-10 showings in five fall events,
including a runner-up at the Bowling Green John Piper Invitational
and a fourth-place showing at ODU. He is rated 78th nationally in
the latest Golfstat Cup standings.
Senior Kyle Spahr, who claimed a pair of individual titles during
the fall season, is just behind at 71.5. The Mundelein, Ill.,
resident opened the year with his first collegiate win at the
Hartford Hawks Invitational, was third at Bowling Green, then
capped the fall season with another individual title at Old
Dominion. Spahr stands 99th in the nation according to the latest
Golfstat Cup rankings.
Campbell twice broke the school 36-hole team scoring record during
the fall campaign. Spahr's 201 (66-65-70) at Hartford equaled the
program's 54-hole individual standard.
As a team, Campbell ranks eighth in par-5 scoring and greens in
regulation, while standing sixth in sub-par strokes per round and
total short game, according to the latest Golfstat
numbers.
The Fighting Camels open their spring men's campaign Feb. 19-20
with the Charleston Southern Spring Kick-Off at Coosaw Creek Golf
Club. CU hosts the Lonnie D. Small Spring Invitational, Mar. 5-6 at
Keith Hills No. 1.
Campbell's women's golf team, which earned three tournament titles
in the fall campaign, is ranked sixth by Golfstat in both greens in
regulation and sub-par strokes per round.
The Lady Camels have won two-straight Atlantic Sun Conference
titles and have appeared in the NCAA Regional Championship 10 times
in the last 13 years. Campbell ended the fall campaign with
three-straight tournament victories. After finishing second at
Nebraska's Chip-N Club Invitational, Campbell won the Shoot-out at
the Legends, Richmond Spider Fall Invitational and the College of
Charleston Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Along the way, Campbell freshmen Mary Mattson (Legends) and Belen
Diaz Cisneros (Richmond) claimed their first collegiate individual
wins. Junior Maite Ortiz de Pinedo (sixth at Charleston) and senior
Alejandra Shaw (11th at Cougar Classic and third in Nebraska) also
finished fall events as the team's low performer.
Diaz Cisneros is ranked 102nd in the nation, while Shaw is 124th in
the latest Golfstat cup standings. Campbell's freshman class is
rated 12th in the country by Golfstat.
Campbell's women open their spring season Feb. 26-27 when they host
the Fighting Camel Classic at Keith Hills No. 1.
