LOVELAND, OHIO Junior
Mark Coppell shot a collegiate career low, five-under 67 to lead
Campbell to first place in the team standings after the first 18
holes Monday at the Xavier Invitational men's golf
tournament.
Coppell is tied for third
place heading into Monday's second round at five-under 67. Phillip Hendrickson of
Eastern Kentucky leads the event after a first-round 65. Joshua Kelley of St. Mary's is
second (66), followed by Coppell, Chris Cunningham of San Francisco
and Adam Cornelson of New Orleans, all tied for third.
Campbell senior Fredric Sundberg is
tied for sixth place, one stroke behind Coppell at four-under
68. Sophomore Gregg
Hostetter is locked in an eight-way tie for eighth at minus-three
69 on the par-72, 6921-yard Oasis Golf Club layout.
A native of Surrey, England,
Coppell bettered his previous low round of 68 (on a par-71 course),
which came during his freshman year at the Old Dominion Seascape
Collegiate in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
Campbell freshman Zak Drescher shot a
first-round 74 and is tied for 53rd in the 104-man field. Senior Isak Pettersen is in a
tie for 63rd place at plus-three 75.
With a 10-under-par team
score of 278 strokes, Campbell leads Akron and San Francisco, which
are tied for second at seven-under 281. St. Mary's (Calif.) and Eastern
Kentucky are tied for fourth at 283 in the 20-school
field.
Tuesday's final round in the
54-hole tournament begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun
start.
