BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Recently released by the Colonial Athletic
Association, the 2007-08 Preseason Rankings include two Campbell
wrestlers, junior heavyweight Jeremiah Fennell and sophomore Dillon
Landi in the 174 class.
"It's always the focus of our program to continually get better,"
said CU Head Coach Billy Greene. "In a competitive conference like
the CAA, you're going to be challenged. When guys see that they're
ranked, and others see their teammates are ranked, it makes them
more confident in their abilities and they continue to get better.
I believe success breeds more success."
Earning a fourth place ranking in the heavyweight division, Fennell
led the Fighting Camels in individual wins last year and tied for
the lead in pins.
The Sandusky, Ohio native ended the season with a 16-19 overall
record, an 11-15 dual and a 6-6 mark in league contests with five
pins. Highlighting Fennell's season was a win over one of the CAA's
top heavyweights, Binghamton's Michael Patterson on Dec. 29 at the
Southern Scuffle.
"There are a lot of young faces in the heavyweight division," said
Greene. "With Jeremiah being a junior, he has experience under his
belt that others really don't have in the conference. He now has an
great opportunity to establish himself as a top three wrestler in
his class."
A native of Long Valley, N.J.,
Landi ranks in at sixth in the 174 weight class after an injury
laden freshman year where he notched a 4-4 overall mark, with a 2-2 dual
record, earning two pins.
Landi began the season at 2-0, debuting at the NC State Duals,
where he
downed the Wolfpack's Cameron Reeves (13-5) and pinned Liberty's
Si-Young Son at 0:55.
"Dillon showed some real promise during the first half of last
season and picked up some wins for us," said Greene. "Of course,
the second half, he was more a spectator with his injury, but he
did get a chance to experience Division I college wrestling, and
that will certainly help him. He's a tough kid that is very devoted
to his sport."
Defending CAA champion Hofstra ranks first in the team portion of
the poll, followed by Rider and Old Dominion, with Campbell
checking in at ninth.
"We're always driven to be better," said Greene. "Our goal is to
become a top program in this league. Hofstra, Rider, Old Dominion
and Drexel are all high-level programs that send the bulk of their
teams to the nationals. It's very obtainable to be able to compete
with those teams. That has to be our goal."
Beginning
