BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Kathryn Saunders' 90th minute
equalizer sent the match into overtime, but neither team could
strike as ETSU and Campbell battled to a double overtime 1-1 draw,
Saturday afternoon at the Eakes Complex. Campbell advances to 1-8-2 (0-4-2
A-Sun), while ETSU moves to 6-4-3 (2-3-1 A-Sun).
A
senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., Saunders' strike marks her
third career goal and first goal since Oct. 7, 2004, in a 6-0 win
over Lipscomb.
The match is the sixth time this season that Campbell's outcomes
have been decided by one goal, including two draws.
The Buccaneers came out shooting in the seventh minute of play as
Morgan Jutras lifted an offering over the back line of Campbell's
defense to set up Jordan Monty. After Campbell's keeper Anna DiTommaso
was pulled from the goal, Monty struck a right-footed attempt that
deflected off the left post.
ETSU created yet another quality chance in the 40th
minute as Aubree Snyder, a senior midfielder from Reading, Pa.,
connected with a volley from just outside the six-yard box, but was
denied as DiTommaso recorded one of her four first half saves,
leaving the game scoreless heading into the half.
The Buccaneers broke through first on a Monty strike in the
49th minute.
After DiTommaso was lured out of goal, Monty, A sophomore forward
from Mesquite, Texas, dribbled past a Campbell defender and
capitalized for her seventh goal of the season.
Campbell's first dangerous attempt came in the 63rd
minute after Danielle Mandela connected with a cross from the left
flank off the foot of Mary Trigg. Rachel Van Horn, a freshman from
Thousand Oaks, Calif., left her feet and stopped Mandela's offering
to secure ETSU's one goal lead.
The Fighting Camels used nearly every second of regulation to even
the score at 1-1. In the
90th minute, Ilene Fahle split the Buccaneers' defense
and found Saunders who fired a shot into the lower left corner of
the net. Fahle's assist is
Campbell's third of the season, and first of her career.
Anna DiTommaso kept ETSU's offense in check making two clutch saves
in the overtime periods. In
the 94th minute, Jordan Monty fired left-footed blast
into the upper left corner of the goal, but DiTommaso punched the
ball away from danger. Just
three minutes later, DiTommaso made yet another leaping save off an
ETSU golden goal attempt to leave the score knotted 1-1.
ETSU out shot Campbell 18-9, with an 8-7 advantage in shots on
goal.
Anna DiTommaso recorded seven saves on the day, while ETSU's Rachel
Van Horn tallied 6.
