MACON, GA.-Coming off its first Atlantic Sun win of 2007, Campbell
volleyball traveled to Mercer on Friday night in hopes of starting
a streak, but fell to the Bears, 3-0 in conference play (30-18;
30-20; 30-18).
With the loss, Campbell falls to 7-14 overall and 1-5 in A-Sun
action. Meanwhile, the Bears improve to 6-14 on the year and 4-1 in
division contests.
The Camels, who struggled against an experienced Mercer squad,
committed 16 attack errors and 11 service errors in the loss, while
hitting .144.
Middle blocker Femi Alabi would be the only CU player with double
figure kills on the night, as the junior knocked 11 on 20 tries and
three errors, hitting .400. Alabi also tacked on two solo blocks
and a block assist in aid of the Fighting Camel defense.
Also playing well for Campbell was sophomore Ashley Weers, as she
recorded eight kills and only two errors on 18 attempts, earning a
.333 attack percentage. Libero Melissa Harvey, also a sophomore,
grabbed 15 digs, leading the Camels defensively.
Leading the way for the potent Bears' offense were Julie Darty, a
senior on the right side, and junior outside hitter Karen Dorris,
who combined for 21 kills on the night. Darty pounded 11 of those
kills on 19 attempts with only two errors, hitting a .474. Dorris,
though slightly less efficient, hitting .280 on 25 attempts and
three errors, also picked up two aces and three digs in the home
win.
Also producing for the Bears were junior libero Claire Tucker with
19 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Allison Davis, recording
11 digs.
Darty made her mark in the opening game, knocking seven of her
team's 16 kills as the Bears rolled to a 30-18 win. Alabi led the
CU offense, notching four kills, while Harvey tacked on five digs.
The Bears hit .364 in the game compared to Campbell's .144
percentage.
In
game two, Mercer raced out to a 20-7 lead over the Camels, leaving
CU in a hole. From there, Campbell played well, getting six kills
and two blocks, but could not top the Bears, as the teams when into
intermission, 30-20 and 2-0 in the match.
In
the final game, the Bears' offense didn't produce as well, hitting
.167 as a team, but the Fighting Camels also had their least
productive game of the match as they attacked a rate of .079. Five
Bears recorded two kills a piece in the 30-18 effort, demonstrating
a balanced attack as Mercer took the victory at home.
The Fighting Camels will try to come out of their trip with a split
Saturday, as they head to Kennesaw State for a 4 p.m. slate with
the Owls.
