BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Powered by a young offense, Campbell volleyball
topped Atlantic Sun foe USC Upstate Saturday afternoon in Carter
Gym, 3-2 (24-30; 30-28; 21-30; 30-24; 15-13).
The win pushes CU to 9-17 on the year and 2-7 in conference, while
Upstate falls to 8-15 overall and 1-8 in the A-Sun.
Freshman Caitlin Bendy, starting in the middle, keyed the Fighting
Camels offensively, hitting .458 on 13 kills and 24 attempts with
only two errors. The Stony Brooke, N.Y. native also totaled 5.5
blocks (4 solo, 3 assists), two aces and two digs on the
afternoon.
Elisabeth Ennis, a freshman setter, tallied 52 assists, a
Campbell season high, while also picking up 13 digs, two kills, an
ace, a block solo and one block assist for good measure.
Powered by Ennis' 52, the Camels also set a team season high in
assists, tallying 55. With the freshman setting them up, CU's
offense also registered a season high in kills, firing 63.
Also playing a major role in the victory was junior middle blocker
Femi Alabi, knocking 19 kills through the Spartan defense, adding a
pair of digs and one block assist.
Sophomore libero Melissa Harvey led the Fighting Camel defense with
22 digs, adding two aces and one assist. Outside hitter Emily
Werner, another Campbell freshman, matched Bendy's 13 kills, while
grabbing seven digs and a single ace.
Upstate's Jesicah Ambrisco, a sophomore outside hitter, and Jovana
Lubura, a junior outside hitter, paired to total 32 kills and 12
digs, leading the Spartans. Middle blockers Sandra Campbell, a
freshman, and sophomore Katie Downey notched double figure kills as
well, with 13 and 11 respectively.
The Spartan offense collected 62 kills on the afternoon behind
their two-setter attack of Morgan Bucciferro and Holly Mauldin,
both sophomores. Bucciferro collected 27 assists in the loss, while
Mauldin offered 23.
Freshman libero Megan Healey grabbed 20 digs for the Spartan
defense.
Throughout the match, each team traded points, virtually deadlocked
the entire time with 34 ties in the five-gamer.
In
game one, Alabi knocked five kills and Harvey collected six digs,
but the Spartan trio of Campbell, Ambrisco and Lubura killed four
balls a piece, powering Upstate to the opening win, 30-24.
In
the second frame, Campbell and Ambrisco paired up again with five
kills each for USC Upstate, but Ennis set up 11 Fighting Camel
kills, distributing to six different hitters, aiding CU in the win,
30-28. The squads traded points until the end in game two, until,
tied at 28, a Spartan error and a Brandy Worlton kill gave the
Camels the advantage.
Game three was owned by the Spartans, as Campbell fell 30-21. Each
team knocked 11 kills on 34 attempts, but Upstate gained the
advantage on 19 Fighting Camel errors.
In
the fourth set, CU fell behind early, 4-0, but battled back to an
8-8 tie. The teams again, locked up for the majority of the game
before a Spartan error broke a 21-all tie. Five more Fighting Camel
kills and three Upstate errors gave CU the 30-24 win.
The
deciding game, like its predecessors, was tight, with little
advantage to either side. As the Spartans, again, took the early
lead, Campbell fought back, taking the game and the match,
15-13.
