BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Campbell, who is currently tied for ninth in the
A-Sun, will travel to the Sunshine State to take on Florida Gulf
Coast and Stetson, in a pair of league games this week. The Camels
(1-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 A-Sun) kick things off against Florida Gulf
Coast (5-4-0 overall, 1-1-0 A-Sun) Thursday night at 7 p.m.,
followed with a 2 p.m. start at Stetson (2-6-1 overall, 0-2-0
A-Sun) on Saturday.
Last time out Campbell couldn't capitalize on 28 shots and a
103rd minute penalty kick in a double overtime scoreless
draw against the Lipscomb Bisons. Anna DiTommaso, who will be a mainstay
in goal for Campbell after Boomie Luck was sidelined due to injury,
stopped four Lipscomb shots in her first career shutout in a Camel
uniform.
Despite heading into Thursday's match winless in their past four
contests (including one draw), Campbell's defense has been solid as
they carry the A-Sun's second best goals against average (1.23),
anchored by junior defender's Sarah Durham and Stacy Sweet.
FGCU, who is in its first year as a varsity sport, has taken to
Division I soccer well as they sit atop many of the A-Sun's
offensive categories, including total points (76), goals (24) and
assists (28). The Eagles
also rank second in shots (138) and are tied for third in shutouts
(3).
Although nine different players have tallied goals for FGCU,
Lindsay Haw, a freshman forward from Palm City, Fla., leads the way
having accounted for seven goals and a league leading five
assists. Teammate Caytlan
Mackenzie shares the league's lead in assists, also recording five,
accompanied by her three goals.
Coming off a four-game loosing streak, the Stetson Hatters will
entertain Gardner-Webb on Thursday before they take on Campbell,
Saturday afternoon.
Stetson, who has scored at least one goal in eight out of nine
games, is coming off a pair of losses last week as they were dumped
first by Kennesaw State, 2-5, followed by a 1-2 loss at the hands
of the Mercer Bears. Senior
forward Sarah Stock has recorded four goals, while Emily Yero and
Jessica Spencer have tallied two each.
While five of seven matches this year have been separated by one
goal or less, seven out the last ten meetings between Campbell and
Stetson have also resulted in one goal outcomes.
Campbell carries a 6-3-4 lifetime record against Stetson into
Saturday's match, while Thursday's contest will be the first time
in history the Camels and Eagles will meet.
