BUIES CREEK, N.C.-After leading Campbell to a pair of victories
last week, freshman outside hitter Emily Werner captures 2007's
final Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball player of the week
crown.
A
native of Sarasota, Fla., Werner notched
a pair of double-doubles on the week, her fifth and sixth on the
year, totaling 35 kills, 29 digs, seven blocks and four aces,
helping the Fighting Camels to a perfect 2-0 record.
"We
have been really pleased with the year Emily has had," said CU head
coach Malinda Ashcraft. "She has made incredible strides this
season, which is extremely exciting as a coach. Her competitive
attitude and physical talent has helped this team tremendously. We
look for big things from Emily in the
future."
On Tuesday
vs. North Carolina A&T, the freshman notched a CU season-high
23 kills, including a whopping nine in the fourth frame to put the
Aggies away. Already pacing the Fighting Camel offense, she added
17 digs as well. Werner also tacked on three block assists, a pair
of aces, a block solo and one helper to complete her
night.
Just two days later,
Werner collected a dozen kills and digs, her second straight
double-double, while also collecting three block assists and two
more aces in a win over Winston-Salem State.
Werner finishes her
rookie campaign with 297 kills (2.80 kpg) and 193 digs (1.82 dpg),
good for second on the team.
Campbell concluded its season last week,
following a pair of victories, finishing the year with an 11-19
overall mark, and 2-9 in the A-Sun.
