BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Campbell
University softball head coach Drew Peterson announced the signing
of Taylor McGee and Christina Melton to play for the Fighting
Camels beginning with the 2009 season.
"Both of these
young ladies come from a strong background of softball excellence
as teammates on the NC Lady Blues Gold organization which
became the first team in North or
South Carolina history to qualify for the ASA Gold Nationals," said
Peterson. "I will certainly look forward to having a first hand
view of their progress. They will directly contribute to the
tradition of academic excellence in the athletic program
at Campbell University, and project to provide solid leadership in
the campus community."
McGee, a native of Charlotte,
N.C., has played four years of varsity softball for Northside
Christian Academy already, competing as an eighth grader in 2004. The 5-foot-9 catcher
earned Gatorade Rookie of the Year honors during that campaign,
along with all-conference and all-state
"Taylor, a two time state
champion from Northside Christian Academy, possesses outstanding
athleticism and game changing ability with her throwing arm
and power at the plate," said Peterson. "She will compete at
catcher and in the outfield, and will be a significant threat in
any batting order."
During her freshman,
sophomore and junior seasons, McGee collected all-state and
all-conference honors as well, helping the Knights to the North
Carolina 2A State Championship in 2005 and 2007, finishing
runner-up in 2006.
McGee owns a .545 on-base
percentage with a .471 average at the plate through her high school
career thus far, but already owns the school's home run and RBI
record. She also lettered three years on the NCA volleyball squad
(2005-07) and two with its basketball team (2005-06 and 2006-07
seasons).
Attending CU in the fall of
2008, McGee plans to pursue a degree in physical
therapy.
Melton, a Lady Blues Gold
teammate of fellow signee, McGee, also comes to Buies Creek from
Charlotte, where she was a three-time all-conference selection,
earning all-state and all-county recognition in her sophomore and
junior years for 4-AA Hopewell High.
"Christina has been a
force as a pitcher, first baseman and at the plate for North
Carolina state softball power Hopewell High, alma mater of former
Camel standout Jessica Huffman," said Peterson. "Christina
will compete well as a hitter and in the field as a pitcher and
first baseman. She is a top shelf individual on all accounts, and
will be a welcome addition to Camel Country."
The 5-foot-7 pitcher, who
also plays first base, has recorded a .420 batting average with a
1.1 earned run average on the mound, and has earned a slugging
percentage of 1.000 to date, helping the Titans to a 61-13 combined
record.
Melton will also begin in the
fall of 2008, and is undecided on a major.
