Wrestling Makes Home Debut with UNCG

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Coming off a promising first meet at the Navy Classic last weekend, Campbell wrestling looks to put an early win on the board with UNC Greensboro coming into Carter Gym on Monday.

"The first home match of the season is always special," said Campbell head coach Billy Greene. "We are competing on our turf in front of our crowd. I expect our wrestlers to rise to the occasion with strong performances and high intensity, a brand of wrestling that fans want to come back to see in the spring when our competitive season really gets rolling."

In Annapolis, Md. last weekend, the Fighting Camels managed a 10th place finish, with junior Matt King, wrestling in the 149 pound division, taking a team high three wins.

King first defeated Liberty's Zack McCray by a 3-2 decision, before advancing on Duquesne's Nate Reinhart disqualification. King went on to take one more win for the Fighting Camels, downing Joe McGinley of Davidson by a 7-4 decision.

Several other Fighting Camels posted wins in solid showings, with Dillon Landi wrestling at 174 lbs., R.J. Mazzatta at 125 lbs., Trevour Smith in the 133 lbs. class and David Wise at 133 lbs. each earning a pair of victories.

Kyle Higgins and Chris Mazzatta also took one match a piece for CU.

The Spartans opened up their schedule last weekend in Raleigh, at the NC State Open, taking home 10 top four finishers and three first place crowns.

At 133 lbs., senior Jeff Hedges took first, with senior Daren Burns at 197 lbs. and sophomore heavyweight Ryan Hsu taking titles in their respective classes.

"UNC Greensboro is a quality opponent," added Greene. "Their squad will show up in Buies Creek ready to scrap. Our success against UNC Greensboro will hinge on a full commitment to executing solid technique, as well as pushing and controlling the match tempo from whistle to whistle. Our squad's ability to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes will be another critical ingredient to success Monday night."

After taking on UNCG on Monday, CU will break until Dec. 13, where the Camels will travel to the Citadel to take on the Bulldogs.
