CHARLESTON, S.C.- Despite strong performances by freshman Parker Burns
and sophomore Dillon Landi, Campbell wrestling could not pull
off the win in Charleston, S.C. Thursday night at The Citadel, as
the Bulldogs took the victory, 26-12.
The Fighting
Camels fall to 0-2 on the year, while The Citadel grabs its first
win of the season, improving to a 1-2 mark.
"We have to
continue to get better at managing matches," said Campbell head
coach Billy Greene. "We've got some guys on board that are hungry
for team wins, and we saw some of that tonight."
CU got off to a
strong start at 174 pounds, as sophomore Dillon Landi took an 11-7
decision over freshman Derek Sickel for three points. The win keeps
the Long Valley, N.J. native undefeated in dual matches this
season, having collected a pin against UNC Greensboro earlier this
month.
Parker Burns
was the next Fighting Camel to take a win on the night at 197
pounds, downing the Bulldogs' red-shirt senior John Buck by a score
of 3-2. The win was the freshman's fist of his collegiate career,
pushing the Camels back into the lead at 6-4.
After a Bulldog
major decision and a pin, sophomore David Wise landed another
victory for Campbell, recording a 7-5 win over 133-pound junior
Anthony Easter, leaving the score at 14-9.
At 141 pounds,
sophomore Kelin Bidelspach stepped in next, taking on red-shirt
senior Michael Arias. Bidelspach, a Hanover Pa. native, took the
win in that contest as well, defeating Arias by an 11-5
score.
"Dillon
definitely got things started for us well, picking up the opening
win," said Greene. "David came through and picked up a win at 133
with a good performance as well. Parker did well in a tight match
with a guy that's a red-shirt senior. He came out with a hard-nose
attitude and took that match tonight. Kelin really dominated his
opponent and nearly pinned him in the third round."
With the score
at 14-12, the Fighting Camels would not collect another win, as The
Citadel swept the final three classes, finishing with a 26-12
loss.
The Fighting
Camel grapplers will be in action next at the Sunshine Open in
Lakeland, Fla., traveling South shortly after Christmas on Dec. 28
for the two day tournament.
