Baseball Announces 2008 Schedule

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- 11 games against 2007 NCAA Tournament participants and 30 contests at Taylor Field highlight Campbell University's 2008 56-game baseball schedule. The Camels '08 slate is diverse as they will compete against schools from ten different conferences and seven different states.

The Camels schedule looks to be tough again as NC State, East Carolina, Brown and A-Sun conference foes Jacksonville and Stetson all qualified for the NCAA tournament a season ago. Of these five teams, Stetson (Mar. 20-21) is the only team that won't make at least one appearance at Taylor Field.

The '08 schedule also features games against two of the most prolific baseball conferences in the country; the SEC and ACC. Campbell heads to Gainesville, Fla. for two games against the Florida Gators over spring break (Mar. 4-5), and clashes with NC State (Mar. 2 and 6) and Duke (April 16 and May 5) later in the season. The last meeting between Florida and Campbell was in 1997. Florida dropped Campbell 13-4 at Gainesville.

Campbell will step onto the field for the first time under head Coach Greg Goff and open its 2008 season with a home matchup – a non-conference three-game series – with the Dayton Flyers on Feb. 22. The meeting will be the two teams first, as Dayton comes to Campbell after posting a 21-33 overall mark with a 9-18 record in the Atlantic 10 conference in 2007.

Also highlighting mid-week non-conference games are in-state foes East Carolina (Mar. 26 and April 4), UNC Wilmington (Mar. 11 and April 9), High Point (Feb. 26), Elon (Mar. 12 and May 3), North Carolina A&T (Mar. 18 and April 15) and North Carolina Central (Mar. 25 and April 4). Campbell used six different pitchers to defeat East Carolina 2-0 last February, while North Carolina Central and Campbell will face off for the first time in history.

Campbell will meet the Brown Bears for the first time since 2003 on Mar. 17. Brown defeated the Penn Quakers twice by scores of 1-0 and 20-6 last spring to capture the programs first Ivy League Championship in school history. The last time the Camels met the Bears (2003) Campbell needed ten innings to drop Brown 7-6.

The Camels open conference play when they host the Mercer Bears just five games into the season, which is the earliest conference matchup since Campbell joined the A-Sun in 2002. ETSU (Mar. 7-8), Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 28-29), Jacksonville (April 11-12), Kennesaw State (April 25-26) and Lipscomb (May 15-16) will all set foot on the campus of Campbell University, making up the Camels' league home slate. The last time Jacksonville came to Buies Creek the Camels took two-of-three games, making them the only team in the conference to take a series from the Dolphins in 2006. FGCU will compete in the A-Sun for the first time after recording an 81-34 mark over the past two seasons as an independent Division II member.

Campbell's first league road swing will be through Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate – also a transitioned NCAA Division II squad – Mar. 14-15. Campbell's volunteer assistant coach John Caddell will revisit his alma mater after helping the Spartan's to a 34-25 mark and a fifth-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference in 2007.

Stetson, North Florida (April 4-5), Gardner-Webb (April 18-19) and Belmont (May 9-10) round out Campbell's road tour of the A-Sun. Campbell will revisit DeLand, Fla. for the first time since dropping an 11-10 nail-biter to the Buccaneers of ETSU to be eliminated from the 2006 A-Sun Tournament.

Campbell will kick off its season nearly two weeks later than years past. The newly changed NCAA rules – which call for an average of five games every week in order to play a full 56-game schedule – state that opening day can be held no earlier than Feb. 22, in efforts to create an even playing field for northern teams.

The Camels are looking for their third Atlantic Sun Tournament berth in five years, as Stetson plays host to the A-Sun event at Melching Field at Conrad Park in late May. It is the seventh consecutive season that Melching Field will be the sight for the tournament.
