BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Four players scored in double-figures led by
senior Octavia Blackwell's 16 points as Campbell defeated Stetson
78-60 Saturday afternoon in Carter Gym on Senior Day.
Fellow senior Adrienne Rieley and junior Marlena Murphy each scored
14 points, while junior point guard Letitia Dickson turned in her
first career double-double with 13 points and 12 assists for the
Lady Camels (7-18, 5-10). Dickson's 12 assists are just three off
the school record set by Campbell head coach Wanda Watkins,
assistant coach Janice Washington and Julie Skinner.
With the victory, Campbell jumps Stetson in the Atlantic Sun
standings and currently holds the No. 6 seed for the A-Sun
Tournament a half game ahead of the Hatters.
Sharnesha Smith led all players with 25 points and was the only
Stetson (4-21, 4-10) player in double figures.
Campbell dominated the glass for the second-consecutive game
outreboudning Stetson 41-24, just two days after outrebounding
Mercer by 18. Blackwell finished with a game-high nine, while
Murphy grabbed eight and Rieley finished with seven. Janene
Macling, Vlendy Roldan and Smith each had four boards to lead the
Hatters.
Campbell had 13 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second-chance
points compared to just 11 second-chance points from the
Hatters.
The Lady Camels had 20-second chance points in their 58-53 victory
over Mercer on Thursday.
The Lady Camels took control of the game with a 21-6 run in the
first half turning a 9-8 deficit into a 29-15 lead with 5:48 to
play. The margin would remain 14 at the half with the Lady Camels
taking a 40-26 lead into the break. The 40-point outburst was the
highest first half total of the season for the Lady Camels.
Stetson was never able to cut the deficit under 10 throughout the
second half. Rolden hit 1-of-2 from the line closing the gap to
54-44 with 12:01 to play, but the Lady Camels went on a 16-6 run
over the next seven minutes to take a 70-50 lead with just 4:47 to
play.
Campbell shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the floor, 41.7 percent
(5-12) from three-point range and 88.5 percent (23-26) from the
free throw line. Stetson shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the
opening half, but struggled in the second hitting just 34.4 percent
for a game total of 40.4 percent (21-52). The Hatters really
struggled from the free throw line hitting just 61.5 percent
(16-26).
The Lady Camels play their final three games on the road beginning
with a two-game swing in Nashville, Tenn. next week. The first stop
in the Music City is at Belmont on Thursday, the Bruins scored the
final seven points of the game to take a 61-54 victory over
Campbell in the first meeting.
