BOONE, N.C. - Campbell
(2-18-1, 1-6 CAA) won the first three matches of the dual, but
Appalachian State rattled off the last seven, four by pin, as the
Mountaineers (8-15, 2-3 SoCon) downed the Camels 36-12 on their
senior night in Boone.
Appalachian State made its move beginning at the 149 lbs. match,
as they picked up the maximum six team points in four of the next
five matches via three pins and a forfeit. Caleb Lesnoff, Chris
Mazzatta (who was wrestling up a weight), and Nick Amato were all
pinned to go along with a CU forfeit at 174 lbs.
C.J. Gittens won the 125 lbs. match to start the night off right
for CU. Gittens squeaked out a 7-6 decision on riding time over
Dustin Smith to give Campbell the early 3-0 lead. It was the second
win in three duals for Gittens, who moved to 2-3 on the season.
David Wise followed up Gittens by taking an 8-1 victory over Frank
Celorrio at 133 lbs. The decision pushed the Camel lead to 6-0 at
the time. Kelin Bidelspach then lengthened the lead at 141 lbs. by
pinning Garrett Minor at 1:52 of the first period to give the
Camels what seemed to be a comfortable 12-0 lead, before ASU made
its run.
Campbell and App. State will both be
off until their conferences tournaments. The Mountaineers head to
Raleigh for the Southern Conference tournament on March 3, while
Campbell will head north to Fairfax, Va., on March 2-3 for the CAA
Championships.
