BURLINGTON, N.C.-
Jessica Huffman stole three
bases to become Campbell all-time stolen base leader as the Camels
went 1-2 on the final day of the Elon Invitational finishing second
place in the event.
Huffman now has 13 steals on the season
and 83 for her career passing Denelle Hicks who held the record
with 82 from 1993-96.
Campbell (8-6-1) defeated Ohio (4-8) 6-1
in the its second game of the day after dropping the opener 3-0 to
Rutgers (1-7), who scored three runs in the top of the seventh.
Connecticut (5-0) defeated the Camels 2-1 in the championship game
of the event on the strength of a two-run home run.
Huffman went a combined 5-for-9 from the
plate over the three games, while freshmen
Olivia Ghiselli went
4-for-9,
Shayla Cullum was 3-for-8
and
Brittany Stanley went
3-of-8. Stanley (2-1) also picked up the win in the circle against
Ohio tossing a complete game five hitter with six strikeouts.
The Camels jumped out 6-0 after the first
three innings of the game against Ohio.
Courtney Quinn singled home
Huffman and
Megan Paul in the first
inning, Cullum singled home
Lindsay Dobner in the
second and Huffman brought home Stanley in the third on a
single.
Rutgers scored three runs in the top of
the seventh inning on a pair of RBI singles and a Campbell error.
The Camels belted out seven hits but were not able to plate any
runners.
In the championship game against UConn,
Katie Dombrowski hit a two-run home run with two outs in the fourth
inning to give the Huskies their only runs of the game.
Campbell rallied in the seventh with an
RBI double from Ghiselli scoring
Amanda Littlejohn. Stanley
came within two inches of tying the game with a line drive up the
middle, but Huskies' second baseman Jessica Quan picked it out of
midair for the out.
The Camels return home on Wednesday
afternoon hosting South Carolina out of the Southeastern
Conference. First pitch of the doubleheader at the Eakes Athletic
Complex is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
