BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Campbell (1-8) returns to the comforts of the Creek
this weekend, as they host Big East foe Seton Hall (2-5) Friday for
a 3:00 doubleheader and Saturday for a single game at 1:00 at
Taylor Field.
The Seton Hall series begins
a five-game, five-day home stand that stretches into spring break
week for the Camels. After Holy Cross comes to town on Monday and
Tuesday, Campbell will defy spring break tradition and head north
to West Virginia to face Marshall. Seton Hall is in the midst of a
12-game road trip to start the season, as the New Jersey winter has
forced the Pirates on the road until their March 14 home
opener.
The games will be the first
time the Pirates and Camels dual on the diamond. CU is 3-1 all-time
against current Big East schools, sweeping Georgetown back in 1983
and falling to South Florida in 1992. Seton Hall's only games
against current A-Sun members came in 1985 when the Pirates swept
East Tennessee State in a three-game series.
The Camels come in as losers
of their last three games. CU sticks pounded out season-high marks
of 10 runs and seven RBI against The Citadel on Tuesday, but were
out-slugged 20-10. Ryan Hamme had another solid day at the plate,
going 3-6 and adding a fourth multi-hit game to his 2007 resume.
Carlton Floyd and Zach Johnson both had two hits and Brandon Scott
recorded 3 RBI for CU.
Hamme leads the Camel batsmen
so far with a .371 average, hitting safely in eight of Campbell's
nine games. Floyd and Johnson are also off to strong starts,
hitting .333 and .313 respectively. Floyd's two stolen bases lead
the team right now, while Hamme resides at the top in hits (13),
doubles (2), total bases (18) and slugging percentage
(.514).
Seton Hall is making its
second trip to North Carolina this season, as they lost three games
to defending World Series runner-up North Carolina. Last weekend
the Pirates went 2-2 in Tampa, beating James Madison 13-9 and Ohio
State 6-5. The two wins were in come-from-behind fashion as SHU
used late rallies to get its first two victories. Eight runs in the
last three innings was the difference in the James Madison contest,
and two runs in the bottom of the ninth against OSU gave the
Pirates their second ninth inning comeback of the
weekend.
Greg Miller's white-hot start
leads the Pirate offense, batting .500 in starting all seven Pirate
games thus far. Dan McDonald is the next highest regular, batting
.292 and John Walsh has provided some early-season pop, blasting
three home runs and knocking in six. The SHU pitching staff has
posted a 7.76 ERA through the first seven games. The rotation
includes 2006 2nd round pick of the Washington Nationals
Sean Black, who has only lasted 6.1 innings in two starts this
season.
Friday's doubleheader is
scheduled to start at 3:00. Saturday was originally slated to have
the doubleheader, but was bumped up to Friday to accommodate Seton
Hall's travel schedule.
