On the heels of its first
victory in Atlantic Sun Conference tournament play in 11 years,
sixth-seeded
Campbell faces second seed and defending champion Belmont Friday at
9:15 p.m. in the semifinal round.
The Fighting Camels (14-16)
held off third-seeded Jacksonville 90-85 in overtime Thursday to
reach the semis for the first time since the 1996 event. Defending champion Belmont used
a 25-3 run midway through the second half en route to a 79-61
victory over seventh seed Gardner-Webb.
Thursday's win allowed the
Camels to match their season-best 3-game win streak. Belmont has won 5-straight games. Not only did the Camels notch
their first A-Sun tourney win since Feb. 29, 1996, but CU added to
the program's highest season wins total (14) since that 1995-96
club finished 17-11.
Campbell also ended a 7-game losing streak in league tournament
play.
Campbell and Belmont split a
pair of meetings during the 2006-07 campaign. Campbell claimed a 79-67 triumph on
Jan. 18 at Carter Gym. The
Bruins defeated CU for the 13th time in 14 meetings on Feb. 17 at
Nashville.
During
Thursday's game, Campbell freshman Jonathan Rodriguez set a school
record for single-season rebounds (267). The A-Sun first-team all-conference
and all-freshman team member broke the old mark of 262 set by Joe
Spinks in 1990-91.
Rodriguez also became just the fifth player in the CU Division I
era (since 1977-78) to pass the 500-points barrier in a year. His 520 points stand as the
3rd-highest total in CU Division I records.
Campbell
has
made and attempted more free throws than any team in the Atlantic
Sun Conference this year.
In fact, CU has made more foul shots (558) than its semifinal
opponent Belmont has attempted (515) for the season.
CU made nearly
twice as many (30-of-38) free throws as Jacksonville attempted
(14-of-16) Thursday. For
the year, the Camels have set a school team record for foul shots
made and attempted (771) and are on pace to break the mark for best
free throw percentage (.724).
Belmont
is
6-4 all-time in A-Sun tournament history and has won 4-straight
games in the event entering Friday's semifinal. Campbell is 2-7 all-time in the A-Sun
tourney, 0-1 vs. Belmont.
In Friday's
first semifinal, host and top-seeded East Tennessee State (23-8)
meets fourth-seeded Lipscomb (18-12) at 7:00 p.m. ETSU advanced with a 77-61 win over
eighth seed Stetson.
Lipscomb ousted fifth-seeded Mercer 85-49 in Thursday's last
quarterfinal game.
Campbell
and Belmont will tip-off 30 minutes after the conclusion of
Friday's first semi. Both
games will be televised live on CSS. Saturday's 4:00 p.m. championship game
will air on ESPN2.
