BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Lonnie Hansen,
a 30-year veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, has been named
assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Campbell
University, head coach Dale Steele announced.
Hansen, who has twice served alongside of Steele in other programs,
joins the Fighting Camel program after spending four years as
assistant coach at China Spring (Texas) High School. Both Steele
and Hansen spent four seasons on the Baylor University coaching
staff from 1999-2002.
"Lonnie is an extremely experience collegiate football coach who
has been in a number of programs that have had success on the
Division I-A and I-AA levels," said Steele, who accepted head
coaching duties last June as Campbell prepares to field its varsity
team in 2008. "At Southern Miss and Louisiana-Monroe, Coach Hansen
was involved with successful programs. That fact that he has also
worked in a private school setting certainly helps him understand
our situation and what we're trying to achieve."
Hansen will be involved in all phases of the Fighting Camel
program. His primary recruiting areas included Robeson, Columbus,
Scotland, Anson and Richmond counties in North Carolina, the state
of South Carolina, and the Florida panhandle.
"The primary reason I'm here is because of my relationship with
Coach Steele," said Hansen, who also served on the Wichita State
staff with Steele during the mid-1980s. "We are looking forward to
working hard and building this program from the ground
up."
In his four years at China Spring High School, Hansen helped head
coach Mark Bell's program extend its string of consecutive state
playoff berths to nine seasons. In addition to his duties as
offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, he also taught
world history and coached the throwers on the track
team.
At Baylor, Hansen split his four years on head coach Kevin Steele's
staff between coaching the offensive and defensive lines. His
recruiting assignments included West Texas high schools and West
Coast junior colleges.
"Lonnie's experience will certainly aid in the growth of our
program at Campbell," said Coach Steele. "He is a hard worker, very
intelligent and has a great relationship with the kids. He is a
good teacher and an outstanding role model for young
men."
A 1978 graduate of Ottawa University in Kansas, Hansen entered the
collegiate ranks as a graduate assistant at Arizona State from
1978-79. He spent six seasons with the Sun Devils, assisting on
both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Hansen then spent three seasons at Wichita State as offensive line
coach, then moved on to Western Kentucky (two years) and
Louisiana-Monroe (five) where he participated in the NCAA 1-AA
playoffs six times in seven years. During his stay at ULM, nine of
Hansen's offensive linemen earned all-conference honors, while five
were named All-American and one achieved Academic All-America
status.
In 1994, Hansen moved on to Southern Mississippi, where he coach
the offensive line and helped guide the program to three-straight
winning seasons, plus a Conference USA championship. Three of his
Golden Eagles went on to the National Football League.
He moved on to Friends University in Wichita, Kan., where he served
as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for two years
before moving to the Big-12 Conference at Baylor.
Hansen and his wife, the former Rebecca Baker, have two sons -
Robert (18) and Luke (14).
A member of NCAA Division I since 1977 and of the Atlantic Sun
Conference since 1994, Campbell will compete in football against
similar non-scholarship programs on the Division I and non-I
levels. Home games will be played at the Campbell University
football complex, located on-campus adjacent to US Highway
421.
