FAIRFAX, Va. Kelin Bidelspach
(141 lbs), Brent Poynter (165 lbs.), Kyle Higgins (184 lbs.) and
Jeremiah Fennell all went 1-1 on the day one of the CAA
Championships, advancing to the second day at George Mason
University. The Camels currently sit in 11th place, with
one team point.
Bidelspach lost his opening
round match at 141 lbs. to Sacred Heart's Cory Dunn 10-1. He
rebounded in his first consolation match by defeating JMU's James
Mitchum 8-4, securing his spot on day two.
Poynter began his day with a
20-5 opening loss to Hofstra's Mike Patrovich at 165 lbs. Poynter
came back in his second match, taking a 13-10 decision from
Binghamton's Chris Klucka.
In what was a common theme
for the day, Kyle Higgins also dropped his first match, this time
by fall at :41 seconds to Old Dominion's Jesse Strawn. Higgins,
like the others, rebounded for a slim 5-4 victory over Binghamton's
Corey Waite.
Jeremiah Fennell continued
the trend at 285 lbs., as he lost to Hofstra's Matt Pollock by fall
at 1:06. Fennell quickly made up for the loss by taking an 8-3
decision over James Madison's Pat Finch, to send him into day two.
It was the second consecutive year that Fennell has made it past
day one at the CAA championships.
Hofstra
holds the overall team lead with 46.0 points, 17.5 points ahead of
second place Old Dominion. Consolation matches are scheduled to
start at 12:00 tomorrow, with the rest of the tournament to follow
throughout the day
