PINEHURST, N.C. - Campbell
saw its four-tournament win streak come to a close, but finished
fourth in a field of 17 schools Tuesday at the Pinehurst Challenge
intercollegiate women's event. East Carolina won the tournament
with a two-day total of 613.
The Pirates and N.C. State tied for first but based on the fifth
player's scorecards on each team, ECU was declared the winner on a
scorecard playoff. Host College of Charleston was third (619),
followed by Campbell (621) and Coastal Carolina (623).
Arkansas Little-Rock's Sara
Wilkstrom and ECU's Lene Strong took co-medalist honors after both
finished at five-over 149 on the par-72, 5978-yard Pinehurst No. 8
layout.
Campbell freshman Mary Mattson tied
for fourth individually at eight-over 152 (78-74). Senior Alejandra
Shaw (79-76-155) tied for 16th, while junior Maite Ortiz de Pinedo
finished in an eight-way deadlock for 19th at 156
strokes.
The Lady Camels entered the
event with team victories in their last four outings - the
Shoot-out at the Legends (Oct. 9-10), Spider Fall Invitational
(Oct. 16-17), Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate (Oct. 30-31) and
Fighting Camel Spring Classic (Feb. 26-27).
Campbell returns to action next week
(Mar. 12-14) in the UNLV Spring Invitational at Boulder City,
Nev.
