BLACKSBURG, Va.-Lauren
Caviness tied the Campbell single-season strikeout record fanning
six Virginia Tech batters in game two of a doubleheader with the
Hokies, but Tech came away with a sweep winning 11-1 and 7-1 at the
Tech Softball Park Tuesday afternoon. In game one, Jessica Huffman
stole her 38th base of the season also tying a CU single-season
record.
Caviness now has 166 on
the season tying her mark from last season. Earlier this season she
set the Campbell career record and now has 435 in her three-year
career.
The Hokies (34-12) got
on the board in the second inning when Kelsey Hoffman scored on one
of five Campbell errors in the game. Virginia Tech plated four more
runs in the bottom of the third with RBIs from Jessica Everhart,
Charisse Mariconda and Stephanie Savre.
The Hokies loaded the
bases with nobody out in the fourth inning and plated six runs
extending their lead to 11-0. Carolina Stolle, Savre, Hoffman, Dori
Nunley and Whitney Davies all had RBIs for Virginia Tech in the
inning.
Campbell (23-31-1)
returned the favor in the fifth inning loading up the bases with
just one out. Huffman drew a walk and then moved to second with
her 38th stolen base of the season. With the steal she
tied Denelle Hicks for the most in a single season in Campbell
history.
Cassie Webb and
Brittany Stanley delivered back-to-back singles to load up the
bases setting up a Megan Paul walk to score Campbell's lone run of
the game.
Angela Tincher (25-4)
struck out all 12 batters she faced in the circle picking up the
win for the Hokies. Ashley Thatcher tossed the final inning
allowing a pair of hits and a run.
Stanley (8-9) suffered
the loss for the Camels allowing eight runs, six earned, on seven
hits in three innings of work. Karlie Love threw the final inning
allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.
The Camels jumped out
to a 1-0 lead in game two with a double to center by Amanda
Littlejohn scoring Shayla Cullum who reached on an error and stole
second.
Stolle put the Hokies
up 5-0 with a double to center field with the bases loaded and a
two-run home run in the third and fifth innings, respectivley. Tech
added a couple more runs in the fifth with RBIs by Kelsy Rokey and
Mariconda.
Caviness (12-16) took
the loss for the Camels allowing all seven runs on 11 hits. Heather
Lowry (7-6) took the win allowing one unearned run on four hits in
4 1/3 innings of work. Tincher picked up her third save of the
season striking out seven in 2 2/3 innings.
Campbell returns home
for a doubleheader against Longwood Thursday at the Eakes Athletic
Complex beginning at 4:00 pm.
