Belmont Edges Past Campbell 4-3 in A-Sun Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

JOHNSON CITY, TENN.—Fifth-seeded Belmont won the doubles point and subsequently defeated the Campbell women's tennis team 4-3 in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun championship tournament Friday in Johnson City, Tenn.

The fourth-seeded Lady Camels (18-5) defeated the Bruins 6-1 last Thursday in Buies Creek, but Belmont showed up for the tournament looking to get revenge.

Belmont (10-7) gained the early advantage by winning two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.

Iva Stojancev and Liza Bensimon won the number-three doubles match 8-2 to bring their season record to 18-4, but Belmont claimed the one and two-spot doubles matches.

This proved to be crucial as each team went on to win three singles matches apiece.

Campbell's Stojancev defeated April Bradley 6-1, 6-3 in the number-four match. The senior finished her collegiate career with four-straight wins. Stojancev's singles record stands at 16-5 on the season and 59-28 over her career.

Sophomore Bensimon picked her up fifth-straight singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katie Rhodes at number-five. Bensimon improved her singles record to 19-5 for the 2006-07 season.

Claiming the number-six singles match for Campbell was junior Nina Surviladze. The Albuquerque, N.M. native lost only two games in route to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelly Pence. The victory was her fourth-straight and improved her singles record to 19-4.

Belmont's Linda Johansson, Elizabeth Conyer and Tatiana Pozo claimed the one, two and three-spot singles matches for the Bruins.

Belmont will move on to face first-seeded Jacksonville in the semifinals Saturday at 9:00a.m.
