JOHNSON CITY,
TENN.Sixth-seeded Belmont defeated third-seeded Campbell 4-1
Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun men's tennis
championship tournament at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
Campbell sophomore Sebastian Thesleff
picked up the team's only singles victory, a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zach
Zola at number-six. Thesleff also teamed with sophomore Brent
Darden to claim the number-three doubles match 8-1.
The Lund, Sweden native improved his singles record to 19-3, while
the duo finished the season undefeated 6-0 in doubles
competition.
The Bruins entered the A-Sun tournament with vengeance, as Campbell
(13-10) had defeated Belmont (7-9) 5-2 in Buies Creek last
Thursday.
Belmont claimed the doubles point
with wins at the one and two-spots, then continued its success in
the singles matches. The Bruins claimed the two, three and
five-spot singles bouts to win the dual match decision.
Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team member Viktor Taune battled back
from a 6-4 loss in the first set of his five-spot singles match to
win the second set 6-0 and extend the match to a tie-breaking third
set. Belmont's Ignacio Gesto claimed the third-set in a close 6-3
contest.
Singles matches that were in progress when the victory was clinched
were suspended. Campbell junior Gabriel Delarue and sophomore Vasja
Gorjup were both in the third set of their singles matches when
Belmont claimed the win.
Belmont will go on to face
second-seeded Stetson in the semifinals Saturday at
3:00p.m.
