CREEK,
N.C. Bob Mathews has signed a national letter of intent to
join the Campbell wrestling team for the 2007-08 season, head coach
Billy Greene announced recently. Mathews comes as a true freshman
from Pompton Lakes, N.J. to a CU squad that loses just two seniors
from the 2006-07 squad.
"I am pleased that Bob has
chosen to continue his wrestling career at Campbell University. He
will be a tremendous asset in our middle weights, as he brings a
tough and technically sound style of wrestling that will raise the
bar in the practice room and move the team as a whole towards more
consistent competitive success," said Greene.
Mathews enjoyed a successful
four-year career at Pompton Lakes High School in New Jersey. A
four-year letter winner and starter at four different weights,
Mathews posted a 126-25 record in qualifying for two state
tournaments his junior and senior seasons. His senior campaign
garnered a Passaic County championship and region runner-up finish
en route to a fourth place finish at state, and one year prior a
county and region championship proceeded an eighth place finish at
the state tournament.
Outside of the high school
season, Mathews fared well on the national stage, placing sixth at
the NHSCA All-American Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. and
finishing in the top 12 at the NHSCA Junior Nationals in
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mathews also received four
first-team all-league selections, and was a two-time team MVP.
Suburban Trends also named him Wrestler of the Year to go along
with recognition as a winter all-star and athlete of the week
selection his junior year.
Mathews was also active off
the mat, volunteering and participating in clubs such as the French
and Marketing Club and volunteering his time to St. Mary's Youth
Ministry and coaching youth wrestling and football in the Pompton
Lakes Youth Organization.
"I preach to my team the
value of not only being winners on the mat but more importantly
being winners in the classroom and the community. I believe Bob
falls in line with this team vision," said Greene.
The Camel wrestling team
competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference and finished the
2006-07 season with a 1-5 conference dual record and 2-19-1 overall
mark.
