CHARLOTTE, N.C.Campbell
University junior Marlena Murphy has been named to the third annual
North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA)
University Division All-State Women's Basketball First Team the
association announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Fayetteville, N.C.
native led the Lady Camels in scoring (12.1), rebounding (9.4),
steals (1.9) and field goal percentage (47.5). The 6-foot-0 forward
posted 12 double-doubles this past season and reached double
figures in 21 of Campbell's 29 games.
Murphy had four 20-point
games, including a career-high 23 in Campbell's victory at UNC
Wilmington. She pulled down at least seven rebounds in 24 games and
led the Lady Camels on the boards in 21 games.
She became Campbell's first
A-Sun Player of the Week honoree in three years when she took home
the award following her performance at Wilmington where she added
13 rebounds to go along with her career-high point
total.
Murphy was named to the
Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team marking the first Lady Camel
to receive this honor since April Cromartie in 2002; senior
Adrienne Rieley was named to the 2006 All-Conference Second
Team.
Murphy's greatest
improvement from her sophomore season came at the free throw line.
She shot 73.2 percent from the charity stripe after hitting 52.3
percent in 2005-06.
Scoring in a team-best 50
consecutive games, she finished the season ranked second in the
A-Sun in rebounding, ninth in scoring and sixth in field goal
percentage. Murphy finished the season ranked 35th in
the nation in rebounding and 18th among players
returning next season.
The squads consist of
students from NCAA Division I colleges and universities throughout
the state. North Carolina sports information professionals
submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the two-five student
teams. All students involved with ties in the voting process are
included on the all-state squad.
Founded
in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals
from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions
from the state of North Carolina. The organization seeks to promote
collegiate athletics and student-athletes at all schools.
Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university
or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of
responsibility lies within sports information.
NCSSIA
selects all-state teams for men's and women's soccer, volleyball,
men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball on the College
(Division II, III, NAIA) and University (Division I) levels. More
than 400 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams
since 2003.
